The Trump administration is expected to make a formal announcement later Wednesday regarding the specific units to be sent.
In May 2023, the Biden administration ordered 2,500 U.S. service members to be stationed at the southern border under title 10 authorities, which were approved by former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. These troops are planned to remain in place until the end of FY2025, according to a U.S. Northern Command spokesperson.
By the end of the month, 1,500 additional service members will be deployed to various locations along the southern border, according to a U.S. official.
The new troops will perform the same functions as the existing service members, including aerial reconnaissance, data entry, training, vehicle maintenance, detection and monitoring, and other logistical support roles.
In the past two years, the U.S. has deployed troops to the southern border for the third time.
In May 2023, former President Biden and Austin granted former Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas's request to deploy 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border for 90 days to address the surge of migrants following the lifting of pandemic-era health restrictions in May 2023.
In March 2024, Austin granted another DHS request for 2,500 service members, including national guardsmen under Title 10 duty status.
