Under the Biden administration, the number of illegal immigrants evading Border Patrol agents has surged, according to new data obtained by Planet Chronicle.

In October, a FOIA request filed by Fox obtained the number of Border Patrol nationwide gotaways, which refers to illegal immigrants who evaded agents but were detected through other surveillance methods like cameras and sensors.

Over 1.4 million gotaways occurred between FY 2010 and FY 2020, with a low of 86,226 in FY 2011 and a high of 171,663 in FY 2013.

The number of gotaways at the border increased from 136,808 in FY 2020 to 387,398 in FY 2021, which was during the last months of the Trump administration and the first months of the Biden administration.

The number of gotaways among migrants at the southern border increased dramatically, reaching 606,131 in FY 2022 and 670,674 in FY 23 as the number of migrants rose to crisis levels.

In FY21-23, there were more gotaways (1.6 million) than in the previous decade (FY 2010-2020) (1.4 million).

In FY 24, which started in October, CBP sources have revealed that over 175,000 individuals have fled.

Despite the relatively small number of migrants crossing without being encountered, officials have frequently expressed concern about the numbers.

In March, when numbers were lower, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens told CBS News that while the number is large, what keeps him up at night is the 140,000 known gotaways.

"In May 2023, a person put themselves in danger to evade capture. This raises questions about their motivations. The unknown identity, origin, and intentions of this person pose a risk and threat."

Due to increased investments in technology, officials have stated that there is now greater situational awareness, resulting in more detections of "gotaways" compared to previous years.

Due to increased detection capability, we now have additional processing coordinators, which has improved our situation compared to previous years, as stated by Owens.

In correspondence with Congress, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has previously mentioned changes in migration flow.

FBI director says border gotaways a great concern

"According to a letter he wrote to the House Homeland Security Committee in January, prior to 2013, most individuals attempting to cross the border did so without being caught. However, under the current administration, the estimated annual apprehension rate has averaged 78%, which is the same as the rate during the previous administration."

DHS has stated that it is operating within a "broken" immigration system that requires Congress to provide additional funding and reform. Additionally, DHS has highlighted the 720,000 removals or returns of illegal immigrants since May 2023, which exceeds the number of removals in every full fiscal year since 2011.

The Senate bill that aims to increase funding and establish a mechanism to return border crossers has been backed by the most recent legislation. However, conservative lawmakers have rejected this measure, arguing that it would normalize high levels of illegal immigration.
