Two foreign nationals are in ICE custody following an attempted breach at a significant Marine base.
Additional vetting for foreign nationals initially directed to holding area.
Officials confirmed Thursday that two foreign nationals are currently in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody following an attempt to breach a Marine Corps base this month.
On May 3 at Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia, two individuals in a box truck were stopped at one of the gates. The driver informed military police officers that they were delivering to the Post Office and were employed by a company contracted by Amazon.
Due to lacking affiliation with the base and unapproved credentials, they were placed in a holding area for verification.
At that moment, one of the military police officers observed the driver disregarding the orders of the officers and driving the vehicle beyond the holding area, attempting to enter Marine Corps Base Quantico, according to Capt. Michael Curtis in a statement.
"The officers promptly deployed the vehicle denial barriers, preventing any further access to Marine Corps Base Quantico, and detained the individuals who were later handed over to ICE custody."
Potomac Local News first reported the breach, but no injuries were sustained and no weapons were found.
On Thursday, Acting ICE Director Patrick Lechleitner stated that he was acquainted with the case and that the two nationals are undergoing removal proceedings.
According to Planet Chronicle, ICE sources confirmed that the suspects are Jordanian nationals. When asked about reports that at least one of them was on the terror watch list and if they were in the country illegally, Lechleitner responded.
He stated that he couldn't verify such information at the moment.
During the White House briefing, Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary, was questioned about the incident and affirmed that they were being held by ICE.
"Since the two Jordanians you mentioned are still in ICE custody and this is an ongoing law enforcement matter, I must refer you to ICE," she stated.
