Trump to appoint former ICE Director Tom Homan as next 'border czar': 'nobody better at securing our borders'
Trump appointed Homan to oversee the deportation of undocumented immigrants to their countries of origin.
On Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump revealed that he intends to designate Thomas Homan as the next 'border czar.'
Trump made the announcement on his social media platform Truth Social.
"Tom has been a trusted friend of mine for many years, and he is the best at securing our borders. As for illegal aliens, Tom Homan will oversee their deportation back to their home country. I have no doubt that he will excel in this role, just as I have known him to do in the past."
Trump stated that the "border czar" role extends beyond monitoring the U.S.-Mexico border to also overseeing the Northern Border, maritime, and aviation security. I have known Tom for a long time, and he is the best at enforcing and managing our borders.
Vice President Kamala Harris, known as the "border czar" in the Biden administration, lost her bid for re-election just six days after President Trump secured his second term.
During his presidency, Trump emphasized border security, which remained a key issue in his 2020 and 2024 campaigns.
Since FY 2021, there have been more than 10.8 million illegal encounters, with nearly 3 million in fiscal year 2024, according to Homeland Security's website.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to adopt a strict stance on border security.
"ICE will conduct a well-targeted, planned operation, as their men are skilled at doing so daily, according to Homan during a Planet Chronicle interview on Sunday. He added that deportations would be a humane operation."
During his campaign, Trump portrayed illegal migrants as individuals who were unwanted in their home countries. He frequently claimed at his rallies that these migrants were responsible for flooding the US with drugs, gangs, and becoming a center for smuggling and human trafficking, stating that they were "contaminating the purity of our nation."
"Trump stated that the individuals he was referring to were rough people, often from jails, prisons, and mental institutions, including insane asylums, as depicted in "The Silence of the Lambs.""
Trump has announced that Susie Wiles, his co-campaign manager, will be the White House chief of staff, marking only the beginning of thousands of positions that need to be filled by his presidency.
