Trump states that he does not anticipate DeSantis appointing Lara Trump as Rubio's successor in the Senate.
Trump: "Ron is doing well on his own accord, and it has nothing to do with me."
According to President-elect Trump, he believes that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will not appoint his daughter-in-law Lara Trump to replace Sen. Marco Rubio in the Senate.
"Trump stated on Monday during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida, that he does not agree with Ron's decision, but it is ultimately up to him. He added that Ron is doing a good job and that his choice was not influenced by Trump."
Trump recently declared that he would appoint Rubio, a three-term senator from Florida and a prominent Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations and Intelligence committees, to the position of secretary of state in his upcoming administration.
After the president-elect and some of his top allies suggested it, Lara Trump, who served as Republican National Committee co-chair from March until a week ago, has been recommended to fill the remaining two years of Rubio's term in the Senate.
By early next month, DeSantis will decide on a replacement for Rubio in the Senate.
On Monday, Trump praised his daughter-in-law, Lara, saying, "She is highly respected and did an incredible job at the RNC."
And he added that Lara Trump is highly sought after.
"Lara has numerous other things to discuss."
The president-elect commended Rubio, but stated, "He vacates Florida, and Ron must decide. He will make the correct choice."
According to Planet Chronicle sources, Trump reportedly expressed his desire to see his daughter-in-law succeed Rubio. However, Republican sources in Florida suggest that DeSantis is more likely to choose someone with prior public office experience in the Sunshine State.
Lara Trump has stated in interviews with Planet Chronicle and the AP that she would "seriously consider" running for the Senate in Florida.
After clashing with Trump during the 2024 GOP presidential nomination race, DeSantis, a former ally, mended relations with the former president and endorsed him, while also helping raise money for his general election campaign.
Last month, DeSantis stated that Florida needs a senator who will assist President Trump in fulfilling his campaign promises, be tough on immigration and border security, challenge the established bureaucracy and administrative state, turn around the country's financial downturn, adhere to conservative ideals, and have a track record of success.
Several possible candidates have shown interest in the position, and we are still collecting names and conducting preliminary vetting. More in-depth vetting and interviews will take place in the coming weeks, with a likely selection occurring by the start of January.
The formal confirmation process for Rubio by his fellow senators will commence after Trump is inaugurated on January 20th.
