Trump's naming idea challenged by Mexico's president with a "nice" alternative.
Mexico's president joked about renaming the US.
President-elect Trump was reprimanded by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum for stating his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico. Sheinbaum proposed a new name for the United States.
During a press conference in Mexico City on Wednesday, Sheinbaum joked, "Mexican America. That sounds nice," according to Reuters.
During the press conference, Sheinbaum presented a map from 1607 and was accompanied by Mexico's former culture minister, Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real.
Suarez del Real pointed to the map and stated that Mexican America has been recognized since the 17th century as the name for the whole northern part of the American continent.
Trump held his own press conference on Tuesday and announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico, following Sheinbaum's remark.
Trump stated during a press conference that Mexico is in a lot of trouble due to being essentially run by cartels, and we help them a lot despite having a massive deficit with them.
"Trump announced on Tuesday that the Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America, a name he believes has a beautiful ring and is appropriate."
The Gulf of Mexico is a partially enclosed sea that borders several states, including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, as well as Mexico and the northwestern part of Cuba. Trump did not provide details on when or how he would rename the body of water. Instead, he shifted the conversation to the immigration issues in the U.S. under the Biden administration.
Trump stated that Mexico must put an end to the millions of individuals entering the US. He emphasized that Mexico has the ability to stop this influx and that the US will impose severe tariffs on both Mexico and Canada if they do not comply. Trump also mentioned that the drugs entering the country through these channels are at unprecedented levels.
Trump's assertion that Mexico is largely controlled by cartels was challenged by Sheinbaum, who argued that the country's citizens are the ones who ultimately call the shots.
During the press conference, Sheinbaum stated that she anticipates a "good relationship" between the U.S. and Mexico during the second Trump administration.
"She said that she believed there would be a positive relationship, stating, "President Trump has his unique communication style.""
