Trump's defeat in the presidential election will be overseen by Harris: "Sacred duty"

As Vice President Kamala Harris stated ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's 2024 election victory, "our democracy can be easily threatened."

Only two other vice presidents in recent history have presided over their defeat in a White House election, and Vice President Kamala Harris is set to do the same.

On Monday afternoon, Congress will certify President-elect Donald Trump's victory over the current vice president in November's election, with Harris presiding over the joint session.

The vice president stated that her objective is to guarantee a smooth transition of power between administrations.

In a recorded video message released before the congressional certification of the 2024 Electoral College vote, Harris pledged to fulfill her "sacred obligation" to uphold the vote, while being guided by her love for the country, loyalty to the Constitution, and unwavering faith in the American people.

In 2021, when Trump supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results, Harris stated, "our democracy is vulnerable."

The vice president emphasized that it is our responsibility to uphold our most cherished principles.

Hours after Trump's rally on the National Mall, where he repeated his unproven claims of voter fraud in the 2020 election, the Capitol was attacked. Trump had urged then-Vice President Mike Pence not to certify the election results.

Since the confirmation of their electoral loss, Harris, as the presiding officer of the Senate, has become the first vice president to oversee the congressional confirmation of their loss, similar to then-Vice President Al Gore who did it in January 2001 after his defeat to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush in the 2000 election, which was decided by a Supreme Court ruling.

In 1960, Vice President Richard Nixon oversaw the certification of his close election defeat against Sen. John F. Kennedy.

In a statement on Sunday night, Biden pledged to "do everything in my power to respect the peaceful transfer of power" alongside Harris.

The president emphasized to new Democrats in Congress that it is their responsibility to reveal the truth about the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol. He reminded them of the event and warned against any attempts to distort or erase it from history.
