Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration is welcomed by red state AGs after four years of fighting Biden.
Kobach says that President Trump has a "clear path" to "strengthen" immigration enforcement laws.
A group of 20 Republican attorneys general have pledged to support President-elect Trump's efforts to combat illegal immigration, as announced by Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach.
The letter claims that the Biden Administration weakened border controls and encouraged illegal immigration from various countries through its executive actions.
"Republican attorneys general successfully challenged the Biden Administration's immigration policies in court, arguing that they were illegal and encouraged illegal immigration. Despite facing opposition, the Republican attorneys general emerged victorious in nearly all of their legal battles."
The AGs are prepared to reinstate Trump's "America First" policies from his first term, specifically his "Remain in Mexico policy" and mass deportations.
The Remain in Mexico policy, which is mentioned in this letter, is a federal law that has been in place since 1996. President Trump was the first president to implement this policy, as set by Congress.
"President Trump has all the legal authority he needs to enforce federal immigration laws, as it is already written in the code and we, as lawyers who have been fighting against the Biden administration's violation of the law, support him in this endeavor."
The attorneys general are also expecting Trump to "completely abolish the illegal DACA programs," as he pledged during his first term. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, introduced in 2012 by the Obama administration, allows illegal immigrants brought to the country as children — often referred to as "Dreamers" — to temporarily remain in the country.
The statement was signed by attorneys general from 25 states, including Kobach.
Over the past four years, Republican attorneys general have been at the forefront of filing lawsuits against the Biden administration. This month, Texas AG Ken Paxton filed his 103rd lawsuit against the outgoing administration over its energy efficiency standards for housing.
The Republicans have secured legal victories in 2021 and 2024.
A federal judge recently overturned the administration's Title IX rule, which broadened protections against discrimination based on gender identity, following legal challenges from Republican-led states.
"Kobach stated that the 20 attorneys general who signed the statement are expressing their view on what the law requires and what it is. They are grateful and anticipate that President Trump will restore the country to a state where the law is enforced and the regulations set by Congress are adhered to."
