Trump's 2024 victory could give the House GOP an advantage in the 2026 midterm elections.

The House of Representatives will have a slim 220-215 Republican majority when it is fully staffed.

The head of the House Republican campaign committee believes that the battlefield is in their favor as they work to maintain their slim majority in the chamber during the 2026 midterm elections.

In November's elections, the Democrats made gains while the House Republicans retained control, resulting in a fragile 220-215 majority for the GOP when fully seated.

The party in power traditionally loses House seats in the ensuing midterm elections.

Rep. Richard Hudson is excited to have a home-field advantage on the campaign trail thanks to President-elect Trump's victory in the popular vote and sweep of key battleground states.

In a recent Planet Chronicle Digital interview, Hudson stated that there are 14 Democrats who won seats in districts also carried by Donald Trump, while there are only three Republicans in seats carried by Kamala Harris. This indicates that the Democrats will be on offense.

In the 2018 midterms, Democrats focused on defeating around 20 Republican congressmen who were elected in districts where Trump had lost the presidential election in 2016.

In the 2018 midterm elections, the Democrats managed to regain control of the House of Representatives by winning over voters.

In eight years, the situation has changed, with Republicans defending their seats in districts that the president-elect won. Hudson believes that having home advantage will help the GOP overcome the typical midterm challenges.

Hudson, who has represented a congressional district in central North Carolina for a dozen years, boasted about the numerous opportunities for us to launch an attack.

Hudson argued that House Republicans who will face the Democrats in the upcoming election cycle are battle-tested individuals who have been through the fire before and have gone through several election cycles with millions of dollars spent against them.

"Their success can be attributed to their diligence in their districts. They have built strong brands and are known for their ability to get things done and meet the needs of their community," he emphasized. "The Republicans in challenging seats are our strongest candidates."

Three House Republicans who won re-election in districts that Harris carried last month are Reps. Don Bacon of Nebraska, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and Mike Lawler of New York.

In 2026, there will be a significant difference as Trump, who motivated low-propensity voters to vote this year, will not be on the ballot for the midterms.

Hudson acknowledged that he would prefer to have him on the ballot because he motivates voters who typically do not vote for other candidates.

He contended that if the race progressed as expected, they had campaigned on a set of key issues that they pledged to deliver. If they fulfilled those promises and had Donald Trump campaigning alongside their candidates, he believed they could drive out a higher percentage of voters in midterms than they had in the past.

Trump was a great partner with House Republicans this year, and Hudson predicts he will be again in the upcoming election cycle.

"Trump is deeply concerned about maintaining a House majority because he knows that a Democrat-controlled House would halt his agenda. He has been actively involved and has been a valuable ally in the past election. I expect him to continue being engaged in the future."

Suzan DelBene on 2024 election and the 2026 midterms

Rep. Suzan DelBene of Washington State, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, aims to win back the House majority Democrats lost in the 2022 midterms by "building on" the "things we did right."

In a recent interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, DelBene highlighted their success in challenging districts and their exceptional performance nationwide.

DelBene, who is serving as the campaign committee chair for her party's House campaign, stated that the 2024 successes demonstrate the need to continue following this path into the 2026 elections.

""Candidates with a focus on community needs and independence were crucial in this election, according to DelBene," she stated."

DelBene emphasized the importance of ensuring that candidates have the necessary resources to communicate with voters and tackle the critical issues affecting their communities, such as reducing costs and promoting economic opportunities.

DelBene stated that with Trump back in the White House and the GOP holding both chambers of Congress, Republicans will be held accountable for their actions and the effects on working families.

"We will hold politicians accountable for their voting decisions and actions, especially if they do not support working families. People want to see effective governance, so if Republicans do not work collaboratively to achieve their goals, this will be a significant factor in the 2026 election."

According to DelBene, Democrats will have "opportunities" in various regions across the country in 2026.

She stated that the DCCC's responsibility is to "reach voters and ensure they receive accurate information about the candidates' positions."
