Trump points fingers at Newsom for 'catastrophic' wildfires.
President-elect Trump stated on Truth Social that he aimed to safeguard a fish, known as a smelt, which he considered to be essentially valueless.
Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, was accused of being responsible for the "apocalyptic" wildfires ravaging Los Angeles County by President-elect Donald Trump.
Trump posted on Truth Social late Wednesday morning that Governor Gavin Newsom refused to sign a water restoration declaration that would have allowed millions of gallons of water from excess rain and snow melt from the North to flow daily into California, including the areas currently burning in an apocalyptic way.
"The governor is responsible for the current water crisis in California, which has resulted in a lack of water for both people and firefighting efforts. The governor's decision to limit water for an insignificant fish called a smelt has led to this disaster. I demand that the governor allow clean, fresh water to flow into California to prevent further damage."
In Los Angeles County, four wildfires are currently burning, destroying homes and threatening the safety of residents in Pacific Palisades, Sylmar, and Pasadena. Over 30,000 people have been forced to evacuate the area, leaving behind swanky mansions and homes that have been destroyed or are at risk of being incinerated.
On Tuesday, the Palisades Fire expanded, prompting Newsom to declare a state of emergency.
"The windstorm is highly dangerous and poses extreme fire risk, and we are not out of the woods yet. We have already seen the destructive impacts of this fire in Pacific Palisades, which grew rapidly in minutes. Our gratitude goes to the expert firefighters and first responders who quickly jumped into action to fight this dangerous fire. If you are in Southern California, please pay attention to weather reports and follow any guidance from emergency officials."
The governor's office did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for a comment on Trump's Truth Social post on Wednesday morning.
During his campaign last year, Trump promised to increase water supply to California if re-elected by tapping a "large faucet" in the northern U.S. However, the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, one of California's top water supply systems, has been fiercely protected by environmentalists due to its dwindling smelt and Chinook salmon populations.
In September, Trump stated that there are millions of gallons of water flowing from the north, originating from the snow caps and Canada, and that it's like a large faucet.
The faucet is massive and takes a day to turn, just like the wall of the building behind you. When turned, all the water flows aimlessly into the Pacific Ocean. If it were turned back, all the water would flow down to Los Angeles.
Trump frequently scrutinized Newsom's leadership on wildfire prevention during his first administration, even threatening to withhold federal funds over the yearly fires.
In 2018, Trump tweeted that the massive, deadly, and costly forest fires in California were due to poor forest management, and that billions of dollars were being given each year with many lives lost because of it. He demanded immediate action or no more federal payments.
Historically, Democrats, including Newsom, have argued that wildfires in California are not primarily caused by climate change and global warming.
In 2019, Trump excused Newsom from the conversation on climate change after Newsom criticized Trump's leadership on wildfires.
