Trump mocks Trudeau with new title amidst ongoing tariffs dispute: 'Great State of Canada'
Trump expressed his anticipation of meeting the Governor again soon in a written message.
Trump took another jab at Trudeau on his Truth Social account, saying it was a pleasure to meet with "Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada."
"Trump wrote, "It was a pleasure to dine with Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada the other night. I eagerly anticipate meeting with him again soon to discuss tariffs and trade, which will yield exceptional outcomes for all parties involved.""
Last week, Trudeau visited Mar-a-Lago, Trump's luxurious property in West Palm Beach, Florida, for a "very productive meeting." This meeting occurred after Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products, prompting Trudeau's visit.
Trump has proposed 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico due to their inability to control illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the US.
On Tuesday, Trump's slight was a result of sources revealing that during a meeting with the prime minister, the president-elect suggested that if a tariff for addressing trade and immigration issues harmed the neighbor to the north's economy, it might be better for it to become the 51st state.
Trump wrote on Truth Social last week that he and others discussed important topics that require cooperation between the two countries, including the fentanyl and drug crisis caused by illegal immigration, fair trade deals that protect American workers, and the massive trade deficit the U.S. has with Canada.
"I made it clear that the United States will no longer tolerate the drug epidemic, which is mainly caused by drug cartels and fentanyl coming from China, resulting in too much death and hardship for our citizens."
The conversation between the pair included topics such as energy, trade, and the Arctic, although Trump did not provide further details about the discussion.
Trump stated that he will address crucial matters on his first days back in office, but did not specify whether tariffs were still a possibility.
On Truth Social, Trump announced that he would apply tariffs to Canada and Mexico on his first day in office.
"The Caravan from Mexico, consisting of thousands of individuals, is currently unstoppable in its pursuit to enter the United States through our open border. On January 20th, as one of my first executive orders, I will sign the necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all products originating from Mexico and Canada, and to address the issue of our open borders."
In his first term, Trump replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which took effect in July 2020. The USMCA aimed to modernize and address issues in the original NAFTA, particularly concerning labor rights, environmental standards, and digital trade.
Trump announced that he would inform Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on day one or sooner that if the criminals and drugs continue to enter the country, he would impose a 25% tariff on everything they send to the United States of America.
