Trump legal team seeks to overturn verdict in E. Jean Carroll case.
On Tuesday night, Trump's legal team submitted two motions: one seeking a favorable judgment and another requesting a new trial.
On Tuesday night, lawyers for the former president submitted motions for a new trial in the E. Jean Carroll case, asserting that the court restricted his testimony during the previous trial, while emphasizing that his statements regarding her accusations were intended to "protect his reputation, safeguard his family, and uphold his presidency."
On Tuesday night, Trump's legal team submitted two motions: one seeking judgment in Trump's favor and another requesting a new trial.
A federal jury ruled last month that Trump owes E. Jean Carroll more than $83 million in damages for denying her rape allegations in the 1990s. The jury ordered Trump to pay $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages.
In their motion for judgment in Trump's favor, attorneys for the 2024 GOP frontrunner contend that Carroll did not prove Trump's statements caused harm to Carroll.
The jury's verdict was based on "confusion, speculation, or prejudice" rather than the "evidence presented at trial," according to their statement.
Trump's lawyers contend in their request for a retrial that the court restricted the former president's testimony, which they assert impacted the jury's decision.
Trump's legal team emphasized that his comments regarding Carroll were aimed at safeguarding his reputation, shielding his family, and preserving his presidency.
Last year, a federal jury in New York City found Trump not guilty of rape but guilty of sexual abuse and defamation, and ordered him to pay $5 million in damages.
""I completely disagree with both verdicts and will be appealing the Biden Directed Witch Hunt targeting me and the Republican Party. Our legal system is being misused as a political weapon and has violated our First Amendment rights," Trump posted on TRUTH Social after the verdict was announced."
Trump added: "THIS IS NOT AMERICA!"
In 1996, at Bergdorf Goodman department store near Trump Tower in Manhattan, Carroll claimed that Trump raped her and is now seeking $12 million.
Trump, the leading GOP candidate for 2024, has consistently and forcefully rejected the accusation. As a result, Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump, alleging that his denial harmed her reputation.
In June 2019, statements made by Trump while in the White House resulted in Carroll's injuries, as determined by the jury.
The jury awarded Carroll $83.3 million in damages, including $65 million in punitive damages for Trump's harmful statements and $17.3 million in compensatory damages for the reputational repair program.
