Trump deportations: Blue state attorney general offers guidance to state officials on resisting 'draconian' measures.
California AG Rob Bonta vows to use all legal tools to safeguard the rights of the state's immigrants.
Rob Bonta, the California Attorney General, has pledged to oppose President-elect Donald Trump and Tom Homan's plans for mass deportations.
Bonta issued new guidance to various state-run agencies last week, directing them to adopt policies that resist Trump's "draconian" and "inhumane" immigration enforcement actions.
"Bonta stated that his office will continue to use all available resources to safeguard the rights of California's immigrants and that they require staff at crucial locations to do the same. He emphasized the importance of preventing the Trump administration's deportation machine from creating a culture of fear and mistrust that prevents immigrants from utilizing essential public services."
The AG office's guidance provides model policies and recommendations for public institutions to comply with California law restricting state and local involvement in immigration enforcement.
"Bonta stated during a press event that in California, public resources such as libraries, hospitals, courthouses, and schools should be accessible to all without fear of civil immigration enforcement. The model policies being issued by the state provide recommendations to minimize disruptions caused by immigration enforcement actions at public institutions."
The California Values Act, enacted in 2017, prohibits state and local law enforcement agencies from assisting with immigration enforcement, except in certain circumstances.
Bonta's guidance prohibits the unauthorized collection or disclosure of information that may reveal an individual's or family's citizenship or immigration status and requires referring federal law enforcement officials to a designated person who will have the authority to respond to immigration enforcement-related requests.
"Bonta stated that the California DOJ's primary goal is to safeguard the rights, freedoms, and security of immigrants. He emphasized that President-elect Trump's immigration policies are harsh and his language is xenophobic."
Bonta, who migrated to the U.S. from the Philippines at 2 months old with his parents, stated that Trump's deportation plan is financially unwise. He emphasized that immigrants are vital to the country.
Kevin McCarthy, a former speaker of the House and a congressman from California, stated on Planet Chronicle that politicians like Bonta and Gov. Gavin Newsom are causing California taxpayers significant losses by attracting illegal immigrants to the state.
McCarthy stated that he would provide free healthcare to those who come illegally, while denying it to California citizens, which attracts many people and results in a significant deficit in the state.
Despite concerns over illegal immigration and violent crime by illegal migrants playing a major role in Trump's retaking of the White House in 2024, McCarthy stated that Bonta's actions are an attempt to "make a name for himself" in Democratic politics.
Immigration was a major reason for Donald Trump's win, and it was not solely a Republican issue, but also a concern for Democrats, attorneys general should take note.
Nathan Hochman was overwhelmingly elected as Los Angeles County District Attorney due to the rampant crime in the area.
"As attorney general, it is your duty to safeguard your citizens. Given that these gang members are notorious for their ruthless behavior and have been responsible for the distribution of fentanyl, which has resulted in the deaths of your children, it is understandable that you would want them removed from your community. It is your responsibility to take action without relying on the president to do it. The public expects more from you, especially in this matter."
