Trump criticizes Jack Smith after special counsel resigns from DOJ: "He left town without any evidence!"
Trump stated that he considered the individual a shame to themselves, their family, and their nation.
Trump criticized Smith as a "disgrace" after his departure from the Justice Department.
Smith's resignation was announced in a court filing Saturday.
On January 7, 2025, the Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report, and he separated from the Department on January 10, according to a footnote in the filing.
On Sunday, Trump used Truth Social to attack Smith for probing into his presidency.
The DOJ fired Deranged Jack Smith today. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his country. Despite spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty-handed. Trump wrote.
In November 2022, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith to investigate Trump's involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and his handling of classified documents.
Smith previously served as the acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in 2017, during Trump's first administration.
Before the release of Smith's report on the Trump-related Capitol attack case, Garland has announced plans to make the report public, possibly before Trump's inauguration next week.
In a recent letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and ranking member Jamie Raskin, Garland stated that he is committed to making as much of the Special Counsel's report public as possible, while adhering to legal requirements and Department policy.
On Friday, a federal appeals court judge ruled against blocking the release of Smith's report.
Smith filed motions to dismiss his cases against Trump after the latter's election victory in November.
In late November, Smith requested a judge to dismiss charges against Trump in the Capitol riot case. Before that, Smith had filed a motion to postpone all deadlines in that case, which was expected after Trump's election victory.
Trump stated that the cases "should never have been brought" after they were dropped.
"Trump stated on Truth Social that the cases he had to go through were empty and lawless, and should never have been brought. He called it a political hijacking and a low point in the country's history. Despite the odds, he persevered and won. He encouraged his followers to make America great again."
