Trump considers ending new windmill production under his second term, citing their negative impact on whales.
Renewable energy in the US is predominantly derived from wind power.
Under President-elect Donald Trump's administration, new wind energy projects will not be pursued, as he believes this power source is unfeasible economically and detrimental to marine life.
Trump's latest remarks indicate that his incoming administration may impose significant limitations on the development of new wind-powered energy projects, despite his previous criticisms of wind farms as a primary source of energy.
"Trump stated to reporters at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday that wind energy is the most expensive energy source and is many times more expensive than clean natural gas. As a result, he plans to implement a policy that prevents the construction of windmills."
The government provides various subsidy options for windmill production, which Trump considers a significant problem with the energy source.
"The only individuals who desire them are those profiting from windmills and receiving substantial subsidies from the U.S. government," he stated. "You don't want energy that requires subsidies."
The president-elect has also stated that interference with sea mammals is a concern, particularly in Massachusetts.
"During the news conference, Trump stated that in the Massachusetts area, two whales had washed ashore in a 17-year period. However, this season, there were 14 whale sightings. Trump added that the windmills were causing the whales to become disoriented, which was evident."
Trump finds consensus with some environmental groups on the issue.
"According to WCVB 5, Constance Gee of Green Oceans stated that the only thing that has changed dramatically in the ocean is the increase in ship traffic, which is loud and involves piledriving and sub-bottom profiling with sonar."
The National Marine Fisheries Service states that there is no current evidence linking wind turbines to whale deaths.
A Democratic senator on the Finance Committee criticized Trump's recent remarks, stating that he is disconnected from reality.
According to Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Trump's opposition to wind energy stems from a lack of understanding of the country's energy requirements and dislike for the appearance of turbines near his private country clubs.
While wind energy is currently the largest source of renewable energy in the U.S., according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), its production has faced opposition from members of the GOP in recent years, who have raised concerns about its potential negative effects.
The recent spate of tragic whale deaths has brought new attention and increased scrutiny to the fast-tracking of thousands of wind turbines off our coast, as Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., stated in March 2023.
In the past four years, President Biden has invested heavily in the offshore wind industry as part of his green energy initiative, giving the green light to the country's first 11 commercial-scale offshore wind projects.
