Trump calls for unity in his acceptance speech for the GOP presidential nomination following an assassination attempt.
'Trump stated that the movement has always been focused on the hardworking and patriotic citizens of America, emphasizing that it never centered around him.'
During the 2024 Republican National Convention, former President Trump, who survived an assassination attempt five days prior, called for national unity as he formally accepted the GOP presidential nomination.
Trump stated that he is running for president to represent all of America, not just half of it, because there is no success in winning when only half of the country is victorious. He made this declaration to the thousands of delegates, party officials, and activists gathered in Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum and to the national audience of Americans watching the convention from home.
Our society's discord and division must be mended. As Americans, we share a common fate and destiny. We either rise together or fall apart, as the former president stated.
The shooting at Trump's rally in western Pennsylvania on Saturday, which resulted in the death of one spectator and the gunman, affected the tone and message of the convention, and Trump has admitted that it changed his speech.
"Trump began the evening by expressing his gratitude to the American people for their love and support following the assassination attempt at his rally on Saturday. He stated that the assassin's bullet came within a quarter of an inch of taking his life."
The former president and GOP presidential nominee stated that "since numerous individuals have inquired about what transpired, I will disclose the details."
He assured that he would never repeat it again because it was too painful to recount.
Trump stated that he knew "we were under attack" during the shooting.
The Secret Service agents who tackled me were praised by Trump for their bravery.
"Despite the blood pouring everywhere, I felt safe because I had God on my side," Trump said. "The incredible thing is that if I had not moved my head at the last second, the assassin's bullet would have hit its target and I would not be here tonight."
"I am not meant to be here tonight. I am standing before you in this arena due to the mercy of God. Many people believe it was a divine moment," Trump stated.
The crowd shouted: "You are right. You are right."
God's plan and the direction of life's journey are unknown to us all. However, the occurrences of last Saturday have made it evident that every moment on earth is a blessing from God. It is our responsibility to utilize each day to its fullest potential for the sake of the people and the nation we cherish.
Trump honored Corey Comperatore, the former fire chief killed at the rally, by placing his helmet and firefighting jacket on the stage. He then asked the audience to observe a moment of silence.
He stated that he has raised over $6 million for Comperatore's family and the families of the two men who were gravely injured in the shooting in recent days.
Melania Trump, the former first lady, was thanked by the former president.
In Milwaukee, Trump expressed his deep gratitude to his wife, Melania, for joining him on this journey during an emotional speech.
In her letter to America following the assassination attempt on her husband, she advocated for unity.
"Now, my fellow Americans, she wrote, 'I am thinking of you and let us reunite as dawn breaks again.'"
The former president praised the letter.
Melania, thank you for writing a letter to America calling for national unity. It caught the Republican Party off guard and was considered beautiful.
"Wouldn't it be an honor if some serious people suggested including the letter in the Republican platform?"
The former president also thanked his family, especially his children and grandchildren.
After his near-death experience, the ex-president urged a decrease in the intensity of the political discourse, which had become increasingly hostile from both sides of the political spectrum.
Trump emphasized the importance of remembering our shared identity as citizens in a time when politics often divides us, stating, "We are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Trump argued that the Democrat Party should cease weaponizing the Justice System and labeling their political opponents as enemies of democracy, as this is not accurate.
Trump frequently criticized the administration of the Democratic president in the White House, but only mentioned President Biden's name once.
"Biden. I won't use his name again. Just once."
Trump contended that "we cannot sustain four more years of this administration" due to inflation, the crisis at the southern border with Mexico, and ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
Trump emphasized to his followers that the MAGA movement was never centered on him, but rather on the people.
He stated that it has always been about America's hardworking and patriotic citizens.
Trump was accompanied on stage by his family, his running mate Sen. JD Vance, and the senator from Ohio's family after delivering his address.
On Monday, the former president announced that Vance, a 39-year-old America First disciple who was once a Trump critic, would be his running mate at the convention's start.
Trump expressed excitement about having J.D. Vance, the current Senator from Ohio, as his new friend and partner in the fight for the presidency.
The Republicans utilized their convention to bring the party together and motivate delegates and activists in preparation for the final stages of the 2024 election campaign, where Trump will face off against Biden.
The push for party unity was evident at the convention, with former GOP presidential rivals Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida and former U.N. ambassador and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley both delivering speeches in support of the former president.
As the GOP convention ended, the Biden campaign targeted Trump, Vance, and Republicans.
Quentin Fulks, Biden's principal deputy campaign manager, emphasized that over the past four days, Republicans have presented their vision for the country. As a result, it is now clear that Americans will have to make a stark choice between two contrasting visions for the country.
Fulks argued that the Biden-Harris ticket, who is focused on uniting the country, creating opportunities for everyone, and lowering costs, is in contrast to the Trump-Vance ticket, whose harmful agenda involves taking away Americans' rights, hurting the middle class, and making life more expensive, all while benefiting the ultra-rich and greedy corporations.
Trump's conviction of 34 felony counts in a criminal trial of a former or current president in the nation's history occurred less than two months ago. However, the Supreme Court ruled on the issue of presidential immunity, which stems from charges brought against Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith. The high court ruled that a president is immune from "official acts." Trump is now using this Supreme Court precedent in an attempt to overturn the verdict and appeal.
A judge delayed Trump's possible sentencing until September.
Despite a disastrous debate performance against Trump last month, there is a growing demand among Democrats for Biden to abandon his plans to run for president again in 2024.
According to recent reports, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, both top Democrats, had discussions with Biden about ending his presidential campaign.
As Trump spoke at the convention, rumors circulated that he might announce his decision to run for president in 2024 in the near future.
TJ Ducklo, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, stated that the reports were "totally false."
Another Biden aide has stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that Biden is more determined than ever to secure victory in the upcoming election.
