Trump has appointed Andrew Ferguson as the chair of the Federal Trade Commission, an anti-trust agency where he currently serves as a commissioner.

"Trump declared on Tuesday that Andrew has a history of standing up to Big Tech censorship and protecting Freedom of Speech in our country. He also stated that Andrew will be the most America-first and pro-innovation FTC Chair in our country's history."

Ferguson, a Republican commissioner on the five-member panel chaired by Lina Khan, was appointed to the commission by President Biden and joined the FTC on April 2.

The FTC is charged with acting as an anti-trust and consumer protection agency.

The new FTC chair is expected to appoint new directors for the antitrust and consumer protection divisions, potentially leading to a lighter touch in antitrust enforcement.

Wall Street and Silicon Valley were targeted by Khan, who blocked billions of dollars' worth of corporate acquisitions and sued Amazon and Meta for alleged anticompetitive behavior.

In 2022, the FTC, under Khan, blocked a $24.6 billion merger between Korger and Albertsons, two large supermarket chains.

Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), have accused Khan and the commission of "mismanagement," "disregard for ethics and congressional oversight" and  "politicized rulemakings."  (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)

On Tuesday, the FTC filed a lawsuit to block the merger, claiming it would result in high prices and lower wages for workers. As a result, the judge put a halt to the merger.

Ferguson's experience could signal continued scrutiny of large tech companies.

Earlier this month, he advocated for the legal action against "unlawful collisions" among online platforms that may hinder "Americans' freedom to exchange ideas openly."

He emphasized the need to strictly enforce antitrust laws against any platforms that hinder Americans' right to freely exchange ideas.
