Trump Announces Ric Grenell's High Position in Administration Following Report on Iran Envoy Role
After the exclusive Reuters report was published Wednesday evening, Grenell labeled it as "fabricated."
Donald Trump, the newly elected president, praised Richard Grenell, his former acting director of National Intelligence, as a "fantastic person" and "a star" in response to a report suggesting he may serve as a special envoy for Iran.
According to two sources close to the transition team, Reuters reported that Trump is considering appointing Grenell to the position.
"A source close to the discussions confirmed that Grenell is being considered, but Grenell himself denied the report's accuracy."
On Wednesday night, Trump posted a Reuters report on Truth Social without verifying or refuting the information in the article. He added, "Richard Grenell is a brilliant individual, a shining star. He will be in a prominent position soon."
On Wednesday evening, Grenell posted a link to a Reuters article on his X account and refuted the information contained within it.
"Incorrect. Once more," he stated. "I hope there is a real journalist at @Reuters. This is fabricated."
Previously, there were rumors that Grenell was being considered for several positions in Trump's second term, including Secretary of State, before Sen. Marco Rubio was appointed and Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg was chosen as the special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The job description states that whoever is appointed for the Iran position will be responsible for "developing, coordinating, and implementing the State Department's Iran policy."
If the Senate approves his nomination, the person would report directly to Rubio.
Trump has been supported by Grenell since his first presidential term and Grenell frequently appeared on the 2024 campaign trail to show his loyalty.
