Trump and Pence meet for the first time since leaving office at Carter's funeral.
Since leaving office in 2021, Trump and Pence have not been seen in public together.
On Thursday, at the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, President-elect Trump and his ex-vice president, Mike Pence, shook hands for the first time in four years.
As Trump entered the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. for his funeral, Pence was observed standing up to greet him with a handshake. Following their brief conversation, Pence also shook hands with Melania Trump.
Karen Pence, seated next to her husband, did not stand up, shake Trump's hand, or show any acknowledgement towards him.
Since leaving the White House, Trump and Pence have not been seen together publicly due to their disagreement over the election results and Trump's pursuit of legal action.
In the 2024 presidential primary, Pence ran unsuccessfully against Trump and withdrew in October 2023. He did not endorse Trump before the November election.
In recent years, Trump and Pence have publicly criticized each other, with Trump calling Pence "delusional" in 2023 and Pence stating last year that he could not endorse Trump in good conscience.
On Thursday, President Biden and former Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and Trump were in the same room for the first time since the 2018 funeral of former President George H.W. Bush.
Former Vice Presidents Dan Quayle and Al Gore were also in attendance.
After the funeral, Carter's remains will be transported to Georgia by the U.S. Air Force on Special Air Mission 39 for a private ceremony in his hometown of Plains.
In 2023, Carter, the 39th president, was admitted to hospice care and passed away on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.
