TikTok CEO to be seated in the front row at Trump's inauguration.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew will join VIP guests and tech executives Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk at a gathering.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew is predicted to receive an invitation from President-elect Donald Trump to attend his inauguration.
According to The New York Times, Chew will be seated front and center on the dais with other VIP guests and fellow tech executives Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk.
On Jan. 21, TikTok will shut down its operations in the U.S., one day after the inauguration.
The Washington Post reports that Trump is considering an executive order to temporarily suspend the enforcement of the law mandating TikTok to divest from ByteDance or face a 60 to 90-day ban in the U.S., in order to allow for negotiations on a possible sale or alternative resolution.
In 2020, Trump attempted to prohibit TikTok in the US and compel its sale to an American company. However, his current defense of the app signifies a shift in his stance.
Last month, Trump stated that he has a soft spot for TikTok. The president has over 14 million followers on the app and recently met with the company's executives at Mar-a-Lago.
Last year, Congress passed a law banning or selling TikTok, with broad support from both parties, citing concerns that the Chinese Communist Party uses the app to spy on Americans and spread propaganda, while ByteDance has consistently maintained that TikTok is not for sale.
TikTok's U.S. operations are attracting interest from U.S. billionaires such as Musk and Kevin O'Leary.
The Supreme Court is currently considering a challenge to a law that will take effect on January 19th. Although a decision has not been made yet, it is anticipated that the court will allow the law to proceed. If the court upholds the law, as a lower court did in November, TikTok's time in the U.S. may be limited.
Trump has the option to repeal the law or instruct his Department of Justice not to enforce it. During her confirmation hearing this week, Trump's attorney general nominee, Pam Bondi, declined to comment on whether she would enforce the ban.
Last month, Trump surprised foreign policy watchers with his invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration, even though it is not expected that Xi will be present.
Although China has been consistently hacking, Trump is approaching Xi and his administration with a diplomatic demeanor, making them aware of his longstanding pledge to impose tariffs of up to 60% on their exports to the US.
"Trump stated in a CNBC interview last month that he has a good relationship with China and has been discussing various matters with President Xi."
