The wife of the American detained in Afghanistan travels to Mar-a-Lago to plead with Trump for a prisoner swap.
In August 2022, Ryan Corbett was captured by the Taliban in Afghanistan as the US was withdrawing from the country.
A wife, desperate to reunite with her husband who has been wrongfully detained in Afghanistan for 2½ years, has traveled to Mar-a-Lago in Florida to plead with President-elect Trump to intervene.
Ryan Corbett was seized by the Taliban in Afghanistan in August 2022, coinciding with the U.S.'s withdrawal from the country, and Anna Corbett has been striving to secure a meeting with the Biden administration ever since.
Reports emerged this week that the Biden administration is in talks with the Taliban to trade three American citizens imprisoned in Afghanistan for a Guantanamo Bay detainee accused of being a close friend of Usama bin Laden.
The Taliban has reportedly halted negotiations with the Corbett family, according to a senior Taliban official who spoke to The Guardian.
During a layover on her last-minute flight to Mar-a-Lago, Anna Corbett told Planet Chronicle Digital that she was absolutely desperate to fight for her family.
The last-ditch attempt is uncertain to succeed, and the Trump team has not yet scheduled a meeting.
"If I could secure a meeting with President Biden in just one day, after trying for 883 days and failing to get a meeting, wouldn't that be incredible?" she exclaimed.
Trump expressed to Peter Doocy of Planet Chronicle that he would entertain the idea of a prisoner swap, but appeared uncertain.
"Trump stated on Thursday that he hasn't examined it yet and will review it tomorrow. He added that he hasn't been in favor of the trade, but he'll make an announcement about it tomorrow."
Since at least July 2024, talks have been ongoing to exchange suspected senior al Qaeda aide Muhammad Rahim al Afghani for U.S. citizens Ryan Corbett, George Glezmann, and Mahmoud Habibi, who were detained in Afghanistan in 2022.
Some congressional Republicans privately raised national security concerns about bringing Rahim back to the Taliban and questioned whether the negotiations had resulted in a bad deal.
"Anna Corbett, imploring the U.S. government to accept the deal, said, "Ryan is an amazing person who has done nothing wrong, and our family desperately needs him. He's a patriot who was just trying to help the Afghan people. We are just desperate for Ryan to come home alive as soon as possible.""
The State Department has declared Glezmann and Ryan Corbett as wrongfully detained, while the Taliban denies holding Habibi.
Anna Corbett stated that her last conversation with her husband was on Christmas Day and it lasted approximately 15 minutes.
She acknowledged that it was a challenging decision because the situation had persisted for an extended period. Despite his efforts to maintain a positive attitude for the children's sake, it was evident that he was struggling to do so.
"He inquired about the status of things and whether there had been any advancements. Unfortunately, I had nothing to update him on."
In 2024, two released American detainees disclosed that Ryan Corbett was extremely emaciated, was experiencing fainting spells and was kept in a basement cell with minimal sunlight and exercise.
Since then, Anna Corbett's husband has gained weight but still experiences constant headaches and ringing in his ears.
Ryan Corbett was kidnapped on August 10, 2022, upon his return to Afghanistan, where he and his family had resided during the collapse of the U.S.-backed government there a year prior.
He entered Afghanistan with a 12-month visa to pay and train staff for a business venture he led, which aimed to promote Afghanistan's private sector through consulting services and lending.
Although the U.S. has imposed detentions, it remains the largest financial backer of Afghanistan, having given the country approximately $3 billion since the 2021 withdrawal.
Since 2008, the Taliban have been advocating for the release of Rahim, who is being held at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba due to the Pentagon's belief that he was closely associated with bin Laden.
In November 2023, the Guantánamo Bay prison review board kept Rahim in custody due to his work with senior al Qaeda members and his involvement in attacks on U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan.
Biden has long been determined to shut down the Guantánamo Bay prison. On Monday, he declared the transfer of 11 Yemeni detainees, including two former bodyguards of bin Laden, from Guantanamo to Oman, which has agreed to assist in resettling them.
