The White House attributes Biden's absence from the G-20 family photo to logistical difficulties.
G-20 leaders took a group photo in Brazil without President Biden present.
On Monday, President Biden was not present in the traditional "family photo" at the final Group of 20 summit.
The president did not participate in the group photo with other leaders due to logistical issues.
The official stated that logistical issues caused the family photo to be taken early, resulting in some leaders not being present when the photo was taken.
Biden's absence from the official photo was due to poor timing, not a deliberate decision to avoid taking a picture with key U.S. rivals such as Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov or Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In Rio de Janeiro, Jinping stood out as the leader among the rows of blue-sky and blue-water attendees, with Biden absent.
Lavrov stood in the back row, less visible.
Biden and Trudeau posed for a photo together at the designated spot, while Meloni did not participate.
Biden did not use the red carpet ramp at the gathering, instead taking a sharp right turn and declining to use the entrance ramp.
The president did not use the ramp because of security concerns, according to the official.
Several leaders from high-threat countries did not use the open ramp and instead chose a different red carpet route, according to the official.
The G-20 summit is a meeting of leaders from the world's largest economies to discuss efforts to combat hunger and poverty. Biden urged those present to increase investments in the World Bank, provide debt relief to struggling countries, and end conflicts that have contributed to starvation, including those in Ukraine and Gaza.
