The US is in talks with the Taliban to exchange prisoners in Afghanistan and Guantanamo.
Osama bin Laden is said to have had a close association with Muhammad Rahim al Afghani.
The Biden administration is reportedly in talks with the Taliban to trade three American prisoners in Afghanistan for a Guantanamo Bay detainee accused of being a close friend of Osama bin Laden.
Since at least July of last year, ongoing talks have been held to exchange suspected senior Al Qaeda aide Muhammad Rahim al Afghani for American citizens George Glezmann, Ryan Corbett, and Mahmoud Habibi, who were detained in Afghanistan in 2022, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The Taliban responded to the White House's swap proposal in November by requesting Rahim and two others in exchange for Glezmann and Corbett, according to the newspaper.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee members revealed that they were informed by national security adviser Jake Sullivan during a Dec. 17, 2024, classified session that Biden was still considering the offer. One attendee stated that during the meeting, panel chair Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, expressed his concern that the Taliban's counteroffer was not a good deal for the U.S.
The safety and security of American citizens abroad is a top priority for the Biden-Harris Administration, and we are working tirelessly to ensure the safe return of George, Ryan, and Mahmoud.
