Conservatives cheered as the Supreme Court ruled in favor of limited immunity for presidents in their official capacity on Monday, while democratic lawmakers expressed their disappointment.

"This is a sad day for America and our democracy, as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., wrote on X. The foundation of our legal system is that no one is exempt from the law."

He stated that the president should not have the power to commit treason or incite an insurrection.

On Monday, the court ruled that former presidents have significant immunity from prosecution for official acts while in office, but this does not apply to unofficial acts. The decision was made 6-3, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing the majority opinion.

"The President is not immune from consequences for his unofficial actions, and not all of his actions are official," he stated.

Justice Thomas and Justice Alito's refusal to recuse themselves from the case has made it clear that this Court has lost all credibility, as claimed by Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt.

The Vermont lawmaker has been a proponent of ethical changes in the nation's supreme court.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., stated that the ruling sets a "dangerous precedent." He added that House Democrats will engage in "aggressive oversight and legislative activity" to ensure that the Supreme Court's extreme, far-right justices in the majority comply with the Constitution.

D-Wash. Pramila Jayapal, the Congressional Progressive Caucus Chairwoman, expressed shock over the ruling.

The Supreme Court's ruling weakened accountability for presidents who use their office for criminal purposes, which could have severe consequences on our democracy, she claimed.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., wrote on X, expressing his fear and anger that our democracy is being threatened by an out-of-control Court.

The conservative majority of the Court will now be viewed by the American people as extreme and openly partisan politicians in robes, as stated.

Nancy Pelosi, the former Speaker of the House, accused the Supreme Court of being "rogue" in its decision-making. In a statement, she stated that the former president's claim of total presidential immunity was an affront to the vision of the founders, who declared independence from a king.

The three justices on the Supreme Court were appointed by former President Trump, and Democrats in Congress swiftly highlighted this fact. Schumer stated that the court's conservatives' decision on immunity implies that political influence is more important than all else in the courts today.

Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., stated that the president has appointed 3 extreme judges and is now using the powers of the presidency in ways that were previously unimaginable. As a result, the court can no longer be relied upon to uphold the Constitution.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin criticized the Supreme Court for stripping away women's reproductive rights and called on Congress to pass her Women's Health Protection Act to restore these rights.
