The Senate thwarts Bernie Sanders' attempt to hinder Israel's acquisition of weapons.
Sanders stated that Israel is governed by religious fanatics.
The U.S. Senate rejected Sen. Bernie Sanders' effort to block certain weapons sales to Israel on Wednesday evening.
The joint resolution of disapproval, backed by Senators Chris Van Hollen, Jeff Merkley, and Peter Welch, aimed to halt the White House's latest arms sales to the Israeli military. Despite their efforts, a vote to block the sale of tank rounds to Israel was defeated 79-18, and a measure to prevent mortar round shipments was also rejected 78-19.
In the Senate, Sanders stated that the Israeli government is controlled by both right-wing extremists and religious zealots.
Sanders stated that the Netanyahu government must cease using U.S. taxpayer dollars and American weapons in violation of U.S. and international law and our moral values, despite receiving $18 billion from U.S. taxpayers in the last year.
"The Netanyahu government has disregarded the repeated requests of President Biden and the U.S. government, despite being the largest historical recipient of U.S. foreign aid."
The 83-year-old politician also decried living conditions in Gaza during his speech.
Gaza's streets are currently running with raw sewage, making it challenging for the locals to access clean drinking water. Sanders stated that all 12 universities and numerous schools in Gaza have been bombed, and for the past 13 months, there has been no electricity supply in the region.
""As I have repeatedly stated, Israel had the right to respond to the Hamas attack as any other country would. However, the extremist government of Prime Minister Netanyahu has not just waged war against Hamas, but against the entire Palestinian people," Sanders concluded."
Although the vote did not fully support Sanders' effort, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., recently expressed her support for his proposal.
Warren stated in a Guardian interview that the Biden administration's failure to adhere to U.S. law and halt arms shipments is a serious error that harms American credibility globally.
"If the administration fails to act, Congress must take action through a joint resolution of disapproval to enforce U.S. law and hold the Netanyahu government accountable."
