The new House GOP bill may bring back Trump's Remain in Mexico policy.
Rep Brandon Gill's first bill is introduced.
A group of House Republicans is pushing to make Remain In Mexico a permanent policy, a key component of President-elect Donald Trump's border strategy during his first term.
First-term Texas lawmaker Rep. Brandon Gill is spearheading the initiative, which was initially disclosed to Planet Chronicle Digital on Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security would be required to reinstate the Migrant Protection Protocols, commonly known as Remain In Mexico, under his bill.
According to Gill, the American people gave President Trump and Republicans a mandate to secure the border, and Congress must pass the Remain In Mexico Act as a first step to fix the problems Democrats created in our country.
In January 2019, Trump implemented a policy requiring migrants seeking asylum at the U.S. southwestern border to wait for their immigration proceedings in Mexico.
The Biden administration was halted from stopping the program by a federal judge, but officials ceased its use for new cases in mid-2022.
President Biden had pledged to abolish the policy, which was condemned by human rights groups and left-wing organizations as inhumane and cruel, due to the allegations of rape and other crimes that migrants suffered while waiting in Mexico.
The Remain in Mexico Policy, also known as the "Migrant Protection Protocols," has been the subject of ACLU lawsuits since its implementation in 2019, as the American Civil Liberties Union previously stated that it created a humanitarian disaster at the border.
Supporters of Remain In Mexico contend that it is the only feasible option to alleviate the strain on U.S. cities and towns caused by the high volume of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers crossing the border.
Trump takes office for his second term approximately two weeks after Gill introduces his bill.
Enacting the policy as federal law would make it more difficult for opponents to dismantle it in the future.
Since the start of the 119th Congress, Congressional Republicans have been actively working on conservative legislative proposals in anticipation of Trump's return.
The November elections were critical for the GOP, with a significant number of bills related to immigration and the border being at stake.
On Tuesday, the House passed its first bill of the term, which allows federal officials to detain migrants accused or convicted of theft-related crimes. This bill was supported by more than 40 Democrats and all present Republicans.
Trump intends to have an active first 100 days in office, with the Republicans holding both the House and Senate.
The White House did not return a request for comment.
