The National Cathedral will host the funeral for President Carter, who will be lying in state at the US Capitol prior to the service.
Viewing of Carter's casket will be open from early Wednesday to Thursday morning for mourners.
On Tuesday afternoon, the former President Jimmy Carter's body will be transported to the U.S. Capitol, where he will be honored with a lying-in-state ceremony for three days before his state funeral in Washington, D.C.
Carter, who was 100 years old, passed away on Dec. 29, a year after his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, also died.
Last month, congressional leaders, including Mike Johnson, R-La., announced that Carter would be lying in state and wrote a letter to his son, James Carter III.
The leaders wrote that they intend to request the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate to allow President Carter's remains to lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol in recognition of his long and distinguished service to the nation.
"We will proceed with these plans, with your approval, to allow the American people to pay their respects to President Carter before he is buried."
On Tuesday afternoon, Carter's formal arrival at the Capitol Rotunda is anticipated, with speeches from Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.
Early Wednesday through early morning Thursday, the public will have the opportunity to view Carter's casket.
The former Democratic president's body arrives in Washington, D.C., Tuesday afternoon and will be displayed at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
On Saturday morning, a week-long memorial commenced in Carter's hometown of Plains, Georgia. Ex-U.S. Secret Service agents who safeguarded Carter served as pallbearers and carried his casket when it departed from the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.
The sight of people on every overpass in Georgia was awe-inspiring and gave him goosebumps just to observe their reactions while sitting in the van.
On Thursday morning, the Washington National Cathedral will host the state funeral service for Carter, followed by a private funeral service in Plains. Afterward, he will be interred in a private ceremony at his family's residence.
