The names of future aircraft carriers are unveiled by Biden: USS William J Clinton, George W Bush.
The newest Ford-class carriers will feature more than 20 technology upgrades, including the future Navy carriers.
The U.S. Navy will receive two new aircraft carriers, named after former presidents William J. Clinton and George W. Bush, as announced by President Biden.
The latest class of aircraft carriers, named after former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, will commence construction in the future years, as announced by the White House.
"Biden stated on Monday that when he personally informed Bill and George of the news, they were deeply humbled. Both men understand the weight of being Commander-in-Chief and the responsibility to support the families and loved ones of servicemembers who are away."
The Navy has eight aircraft carriers named after former presidents, with some of them being over 50 years old and set to be retired in the near future.
The future carriers Clinton and Bush will be enduring symbols of their respective legacies, as Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated.
According to Austin, aircraft carriers are the core of America's naval forces and enable the country to project power and provide combat capabilities anywhere, anytime, in defense of its democracy.
As their namesakes, these future carriers and their crews will work to safeguard our national security, remind us of our history, and inspire others to serve our great republic, Austin stated.
The Ford-class carriers, including future carriers Clinton and Bush, will be added to the fleet.
The Nimitz-class carriers, which were introduced in 1975, have been replaced by newer carriers that feature more than 20 new technologies. Among these upgrades is a new Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS), which allows for electronic launch of aircraft, eliminating the need for steam-powered equipment.
During his first term as president in 2017, President-elect Donald Trump advocated for a 12-carrier Navy, and he has expressed interest in expanding the sea service's force in his second term.
"Trump stated on radio host Hugh Hewitt this month that they will be announcing good news related to the Navy. He emphasized the need for ships and revealed that they might have to go to other countries and bid them out to acquire them. He added that it is acceptable to do so in order to prepare themselves."
