Trump's lawyers filed a motion to postpone the trial over hush money payments until the Supreme Court rules on presidential immunity.

The trial of the former president and 2024 GOP presumptive nominee in New York City is scheduled to start on March 25 with jury selection, but his attorneys are requesting a postponement of the trial.

"The trial in Trump v. United States should be adjourned until the Supreme Court reviews the scope of the presidential immunity doctrine, which is set to be argued on April 25, 2024. Additionally, the motion suggests that an evidentiary hearing outside the jury's presence should be held, and evidence of President Trump's official acts should be precluded from trial based on presidential immunity."

After Judge Juan Merchan set March 25 for jury selection and announced that the trial is expected to last six weeks, the motion was made.

In April, Trump was indicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, but he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Last month, Trump and his lawyers attempted to dismiss the case entirely, but Merchan rejected their request.

Trump was accused of falsifying New York business records multiple times in order to conceal his criminal activities, which would have been damaging to his presidential campaign in 2016.

Alleged hush money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign are the subject of the charges.

In 2019, federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York declined to charge Trump over payments made to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. The Federal Election Commission also dropped its investigation into the matter in 2021.

Trump's attorneys have filed a motion following the Supreme Court's decision to hear arguments on presidential immunity on April 25. A verdict on the matter is anticipated in late June.

The high court is considering a question that arose from Trump's challenge to charges brought against him by Special Counsel Jack Smith in relation to election interference.

The Smith trial, initially scheduled to start on March 4, has been postponed indefinitely by the Supreme Court after agreeing to hear arguments on the matter.

Trump and his legal team argued that if a president is prosecuted and the prosecution is upheld, it will set a precedent for future presidents to be prosecuted, leading to a cycle of recrimination and destruction.

"The threat of future criminal prosecution by a politically opposed Administration will overshadow every future President's official acts, especially the most politically controversial decisions."

Trump's request claims that his political opponents will try to manipulate and control his decisions through effective extortion or blackmail, threatening to indict him for actions that do not warrant any such prosecution, either explicitly or implicitly, by a future, hostile administration.

Smith accused the former president of conspiring to defraud the United States, obstructing an official proceeding, and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding, all of which were related to Smith's investigation into Trump's involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and alleged interference in the 2020 election result.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges in August.

The Supreme Court will hear a case involving the presumed Republican presidential nominee for the second time.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the GOP frontrunner in his challenge to Colorado's effort to remove him from the 2024 primary ballot.

The ruling of the high court in favor of Trump's arguments in the case will affect the status of efforts in several other states to remove the likely GOP nominee from their respective ballots.

For the first time, the court examined the scope and interpretation of Article 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals who "engaged in insurrection" from holding public office again. Thirty-one states have filed challenges to keep Trump off the 2024 ballot.

Trump shifted his focus to the issue of presidential immunity after the ruling last week.

Trump declared the victory as "very, very important" in an exclusive interview with Planet Chronicle Digital following the decision.

"Trump stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that the decision on immunity for a president is crucial for the country, as without it, the presidency would lose its intended power and become a mere ceremonial position. Trump emphasized that no president can function effectively without complete and total immunity."

He added, "Our country would be put at great risk."
