The least-liked parts of Trump's agenda have been revealed in a poll.
Poll reveals US adults' opinions on mass deportations, pardons, and other Trump agenda items on Inauguration Day.
On Inauguration Day, a poll was released, showing both the most favored and least preferred elements of President-elect Trump's agenda.
The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research surveyed U.S. adults on their stances on mass deportations, tariffs, potential pardons for Jan. 6 rioters, and increased drilling of U.S. oil and gas, among other proposals brought by the soon-to-be 47th president on the 2024 campaign trail. The poll found that a significant portion of Americans hold a neutral view on parts of Trump's agenda, indicating that public opinion could easily shift in the coming weeks.
A poll of 1,147 adults was conducted from January 9 to 13, utilizing a sample from NORC's probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which represents the U.S. population. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.9 percentage points.
Mass deportations
Trump has pledged to implement the largest deportation program in U.S. history. A poll by AP-NORC found that U.S. adults would support targeted deportations of immigrants with criminal records, even if they were legal residents.
According to a poll, about eight in 10 U.S. adults favor deporting all immigrants living in the U.S. illegally who have been convicted of a violent crime, including about two-thirds who are strongly in favor. However, only four in 10 of U.S. adults support deporting immigrants who are in the country illegally and have not been convicted of a crime.
Tariffs
The transition team has been developing a plan to gradually implement tariffs on imported goods from other countries, in an effort to mitigate the potential impact of inflation.
According to the AP-NORC poll, nearly half of U.S. adults have a negative stance towards imposing a tariff on imported goods from other countries.
According to the poll, approximately 30% are in favor of the policy, while 25% are neutral, indicating they neither support nor oppose it. The AP predicts that opinion may shift in either direction if the tariffs are implemented.
A majority of Republicans support a tariff on all imported goods, while about half of Democrats and independents are either opposed or unsure.
Jan. 6 pardons
Trump hinted during his campaign that he might grant pardons to the over 1,500 individuals charged for the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Approximately 20% of U.S. adults support pardoning most individuals involved in the Capitol riot, according to an AP-NORC poll.
Approximately six out of ten people have a "somewhat" or "strongly" negative stance towards the proposal, with half of them being strongly opposed, and about two out of ten are neutral.
A poll revealed that approximately 40% of Republicans support pardoning many of the January 6th participants, while about 30% are neutral and 30% are against it.
'Drill Baby Drill'
Trump has pledged to make the United States the leader in energy production by reducing costs through increased drilling of oil and gas, both on and off federal lands.
According to an AP-NORC poll, the majority of U.S. adults are divided on the issue of increasing oil drilling on federal lands, with about one-third favoring it and about 4 in 10 opposing it.
Rewritten sentence: One-quarter of Americans neither support nor oppose increasing oil drilling on federal lands.
According to the poll, while Republicans generally support increasing oil drilling, this proposal is not well-received among Democrats or independents.
Paris Climate Accords
Trump has stated that he plans to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement for a second time upon assuming office.
Nearly half of Americans have a negative stance on withdrawing from the agreement, according to an AP-NORC poll.
Approximately two out of 10 U.S. adults are "somewhat" or "strongly" in favor of withdrawing from the agreement aimed at decreasing carbon emissions, while roughly one-quarter are impartial.
Republicans are divided on the issue, with slightly less than half in favor and about three in 10 opposed, while most of the opposition comes from Democrats.
Title IX
A federal judge in Kentucky recently blocked the Biden administration's attempt to redefine sex in Title IX as "gender identity," nationwide.
The AP-NORC poll found that Biden's Title IX rewrite promotes discrimination for transgender or LGBTQ+ students, but the Trump campaign has highlighted stories of women and girl athletes who have lost scholarship opportunities and felt uncomfortable and unsafe when forced to compete against or change in locker rooms with biological males identifying as female.
According to the survey, more people are against than in favor of removing protections for transgender students under Title IX, which prohibits discrimination based on gender in high schools and colleges that receive federal funds.
According to the survey, approximately half of U.S. adults have a negative stance towards removing these protections, while around 30% support it, and the remaining percentage is neutral.
Eliminating the debt ceiling
Lawmakers were pressured by Trump to increase or eliminate the national debt ceiling during the final stages of negotiations to prevent a government shutdown.
Approximately half of U.S. adults are against removing the debt ceiling, while one-quarter support it, and three out of 10 are indifferent, indicating there may be an opportunity for public opinion to change.
According to the survey, Democrats and Republicans have a similar likelihood of opposing the removal of the debt ceiling.
Trump advocated for tax cuts for Americans and popularized the slogan "No tax on tips." A poll revealed that approximately 50% of U.S. adults support eliminating taxes on tip earnings.
