The last indoor inauguration ceremony took place in 1985, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan.
The temperature on Inauguration Day 40 years ago was 7 degrees, with a windchill of -40 degrees.
Due to the cold weather forecast for Monday, President Donald Trump's inauguration will take place indoors at the U.S. Capitol, marking the first indoor inauguration since Ronald Reagan's second inauguration in January 1985.
On that freezing January 20th, 40 years ago, the air temperature was 7 degrees, and the windchill was a bone-chilling -40 degrees.
The forecast for Monday predicts a high of 23 degrees and a low of 10, but the city will experience strong winds, making the temperature feel like it's below double digits.
President Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated inside the Capitol in 1801, while President James Monroe's inauguration was held outside due to the Capitol's damage after the War of 1812. This event marked the beginning of the custom of swearing in a president outside in front of the National Mall.
In 1961, President John F. Kennedy's inauguration had similar temperatures, with a high of 26 and a low of 19. Despite a storm that dumped eight inches of snow the previous day, the event was held outside.
Trump posted on Truth Social, stating that the severe record lows in Washington, D.C.'s weather forecast, taking into account the windchill factor, could be expected.
"An Arctic blast is hitting the country, and it's crucial to ensure the safety of the tens of thousands of law enforcement, first responders, police K9s, horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters who will be outside for many hours on the 20th. If you plan to attend, make sure to dress warmly."
The Capital One Arena in D.C. will be open for live viewing of Trump's inauguration and hosting the Presidential Parade on Monday.
"After my swearing in, I will join the crowd at Capital One," Trump wrote.
