The House Oversight Committee will hold its first hearing on government telework during the new Congress.
The former Social Security Chief, Martin O'Malley, will provide testimony at the Jan 15 hearing.
The House Oversight Committee is conducting its inaugural hearing of the new Congress next week, with Chairman James Comer stating that his top priority is to get federal employees back into the office during the pandemic.
The "Stay-at-Home Federal Workforce: Another Biden-Harris Administration Legacy" hearing will occur on Wednesday, January 15th at 10 a.m.
The former commissioner of the Social Security Administration, Rachel Greszler of the Economic Policy Innovation Center, and president of the board of the Federal City Council Tom Davis are scheduled to appear.
Before the end of his tenure, O'Malley agreed to telework arrangements for 42,000 Social Security employees until 2029.
"President Trump and his incoming administration will face largely vacant federal government office buildings due to the federal workforce still taking advantage of the Biden administration's outdated and detrimental pandemic-era telework policies, according to Comer. These telework policies put at risk the ability of agencies to deliver critical services to the American people, and reports suggest that the Biden administration is now collaborating with federal employee unions to secure long-term telework guarantees."
According to Comer, the federal workforce unions should not hinder or prevent President-elect Trump's agenda and critical services provided by the federal government, as they are striking deals with the Biden Administration to stay at home.
"The federal workforce should return to in-person work for the benefit of the American people, according to him. The House Oversight Committee is determined to ensure that federal employees fulfill their duties to the public."
The Senate report by Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, reveals that the federal government owns over 7,000 vacant buildings and nearly 2,500 partially empty ones.
The average occupancy rate of government buildings is currently 12%, according to the report.
The committee intends to scrutinize the Biden-Harris administration's failure to return federal employees to the office during the hearing, stating that this could hinder the incoming Trump administration's ability to bring them back due to long-term telework agreements signed with federal employee unions.
