The House Oversight Committee's top Democrat position is no longer being sought by AOC.
Virginia Congressman Gerry Connolly has been chosen as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.
Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia won the race to become the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, defeating Progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.
In a blow for progressives, Ocasio-Cortez was defeated by Connolly with 131 to 84 votes.
"I express gratitude to my colleagues for their support and trust in me to lead the House Democrats on the Oversight Committee," Connolly stated after being elected by the caucus.
In his speech, Connolly criticized the Republican playbook, arguing that it involved spreading "debunked conspiracy theories" and supporting "the worst abuses of the Trump Administration."
""Our Committee Democrats will be a beacon of truth and prepared from day one to counter Republican gaslighting," Connolly said, emphasizing that this will not be trench warfare."
Connolly stated that Democrats will remain "disciplined" and "laser-focused" on the kitchen table concerns that impact the American public.
"He stated that they will defend their democracy, truth, and the remarkable advancements they have achieved as House Democrats."
