The state funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100, commenced on Saturday morning. The week-long ceremonies will pay tribute to Carter's journey from his birthplace in Plains, Georgia, to his international humanitarian work and his tenure as the 39th president of the United States.
On Saturday morning, people congregated in downtown Plains to lay flowers at Carter's monument. The tribute included Habitat for Humanity hard hats with handwritten messages, such as "God bless you, Mr. President," as reported first by USA Today.
Carter's cause of death on Dec. 29 was unclear, following the passing of his wife Rosalynn on Nov. 19, 2023. She died at the age of 96 with her family by her side at the Carter home in Plains, just days after she had been admitted to hospice care.
Carter was the oldest living president.
