On Tuesday, Aric Nesbitt, the Republican state Senate Minority Leader, declared his candidacy for governor, making him the first major party contender to do so.
"Nesbitt stated in a social media launch video that Michigan deserves better than what it's currently getting from Lansing. He plans to run a campaign that prioritizes Michigan, families, and workers first. He is determined to fight for what he believes in."
Nesbitt highlighted his conservative philosophy by stating, "I trust families more than the government."
"Empowering taxpayers instead of tax-takers is a key part of the Michigan First agenda, which requires Lansing to deliver value for money," he stressed.
Nesbitt, who emphasized his "small town farm boy" background in his video, also committed to supporting President Trump in revitalizing manufacturing in Michigan.
A large field is expected to attract Republican candidates in Michigan, with Nesbit being the first to enter the race.
A committee has been formed by former GOP state Attorney General Mike Cox to explore a potential gubernatorial bid. Other Republicans who are believed to be considering a run include Rep. John James, former state House Speaker Tom Leonard, Oakland County businessman Kevin Rinke, 2022 GOP gubernatorial nominee Tudor Dixon, and former gubernatorial and presidential candidate Perry Johnson.
Jocelyn Benson, Pete Buttigieg, and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow are among the Democrats considering a run for governor.
Recently, Detroit's Mayor Mike Duggan announced his plans to run for governor in 2026 as an independent.
Michigan is a crucial general election battleground state.
In the 2020 election, President Biden won the state by a narrow margin, while President-elect Trump won the state in November's election. However, Democrats retained a highly contested open Senate seat.
