The Democrats plan to confirm nominees through a virtual roll call before the DNC in Chicago to prevent potential legal challenges.
Democrats could face challenges to their ballot access if Republicans vote on their nominee in August.
The DNC declared on Wednesday that it will conduct a virtual roll call vote for its presidential and vice presidential candidates prior to the upcoming convention in Chicago to prevent any potential legal disputes.
If Democrats postpone choosing a nominee until after President Biden exits the race, Republicans may challenge their inclusion on state ballots due to conflicting election laws.
But the likelihood of such challenges appears to be fading.
The deadline for candidates to declare their candidacies with the convention is July 27, and until July 30, they must meet the qualifications for nomination. Electronic voting by the earliest delegates will begin on Aug. 1, provided Vice President Harris is the only candidate who meets the necessary criteria and achieves the required delegate support threshold.
If more than one candidate meets the requirements, a five-day period will be granted for each candidate to present their case for nomination to the delegates before voting commences.
Harris secured the nomination within 36 hours of Biden's withdrawal from the race, after gaining support from over half of the nearly 4,000 delegates.
She announced on social media at 12:01 AM on Tuesday that she was proud to have earned the necessary support to become her party's nominee.
Jaime Harrison, DNC Chair, stated that as a party, it is our responsibility to establish a fair nomination process for delegates to express their preferences through a vote to select the official Democratic Party presidential nominee, who will ultimately appear on the ballot in November.
"Despite efforts by extreme Republicans to undermine public trust in our institutions, the dedication of our Rules Committee and the commitment of our delegates to uphold their voting responsibilities in the upcoming days demonstrate the resilience of our democracy."
The Democratic National Convention Committee Chair, Minyon Moore, reiterated Harrison's statement, expressing confidence that the announced process was secure, democratic, and crucial in safeguarding the party against frivolous lawsuits from Republicans and dark money groups.
"The Chicago convention will be a pivotal moment for our party, as we gather to support our nominees and present their daring platform for the upcoming four years. Additionally, the event will provide an opportunity for delegates to participate in voting on our party's platform and engage in a traditional state-by-state roll call."
The United Center in Chicago will host the Democratic National Convention from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22.
