On Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard announced the deployment of personnel and equipment to various maritime borders in the United States, following the dismissal of its leader the previous day by President Donald Trump.
Adm. Kevin Lunday, the Acting Commandant of the Coast Guard, stated that coast guardsmen would work to prevent illegal migration in accordance with Trump's recently issued executive orders.
"The U.S. Coast Guard is the world's leading maritime law enforcement agency, responsible for safeguarding America's maritime borders, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. According to Lunday, the President's Executive Orders have instructed me to direct my operational commanders to immediately increase the Coast Guard's presence by deploying cutters, aircraft, boats, and specialized forces."
Authorities will concentrate their efforts on the waters off Florida, maritime borders around Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories to prevent migrants from Haiti and Cuba from entering the U.S.
Lunday stated in the release that the agency would focus on the "maritime border between Texas and Mexico in the Gulf of Mexico."
