The Biden administration condemns the murder of Laken Riley on the UGA campus and calls for accountability.
Laken Riley's murderer, Jose Ibarra from Venezuela, is charged with eight offenses.
On Monday, the White House issued a statement about the murder of Laken Riley, an Augusta University student, on the University of Georgia campus in Athens.
"The White House spokesperson conveyed their sincerest sympathies to Laken Hope Riley's family and loved ones, stating that those responsible should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. As this is an ongoing investigation, the spokesperson advised referring any inquiries to state law enforcement and ICE."
On February 23, UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark announced the arrest of Jose Antonio Ibarra, a 26-year-old illegal immigrant from Venezuela, who is accused of murdering Riley on UGA's campus while she was out for a Thursday morning jog.
During a Friday evening press conference, Clark announced that Riley had passed away due to blunt force trauma.
Earlier, President Biden stated that the country's laws and resources are inadequate to manage our immigration system.
""Our politics has failed to fix the broken issue, and the president urged Republican friends on the hill to compromise and not do nothing," the president stated."
In September 2022, Ibarra illegally crossed the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, and was subsequently paroled into the United States.
He first traveled to New York City and temporarily lived with his wife before moving to Athens, where he resided for approximately six months near UGA's southern border, as reported by neighbors.
Ibarra is currently being accused of multiple crimes, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another person.
Diego Ibarra, his older brother who is accused of green card fraud, was briefly employed as a dishwasher at UGA's dining hall after submitting false documents. He was subsequently terminated.
On Sept. 8, 2022, Jose Antonio Ibarra was encountered by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). A year later, on Sept. 14, 2023, he was arrested by the New York Police Department and charged with acting in a manner to injure a child less than 17 and a motor vehicle license violation.
On Saturday, Riley's family released a statement about the 22-year-old, calling her an "incredible daughter, sister, friend, and individual."
"Her love for the Lord was evident in all aspects of her life. Although she will be missed daily, we pledge to honor her life in a significant way moving forward." The statement shared with WXIA read, in part. "During this challenging time, we request that you respect our privacy and allow us the time and space to mourn the sudden loss of our daughter."
