Texas state representative switches to GOP, accusing Democrats of being in a "progressive abyss."
Thierry lost the Democratic run-off election despite opposing a GOP bill prohibiting gender transition procedures for minors.
A Texas state politician who is a Democrat is switching to the Republican Party for the remaining four months of her term.
On Friday, Rep. Shawn Thierry posted a statement on social media criticizing the Democratic Party's "progressive abyss" after losing her primary for supporting a GOP-led bill that safeguards minors from gender transition procedures.
Thierry wrote that the Democratic Party has gone too far left and is now promoting policies that he cannot support, such as promoting sex changes for children and dismantling Title IX protections for women in sports.
Due to her departure from her party's values, Thierry stated that she would complete her remaining time in office as a member of the GOP.
She stated that she now stands with the party of Lincoln, which fought to preserve our Union and end the atrocities of slavery.
In May, Lauren Ashley Simmons defeated Thierry in a runoff election.
Her support for a 2023 Republican bill that barred gender transition for minors is believed to have been a major factor in her failure within the Democratic Party.
""Biological women have the right to be respected and protected from being sexualized and sterilized, as mothers across the country understand it is our sacred duty to preserve the innocence of our children," Thierry wrote."
She concluded that she would not be alone, as she would be surrounded by millions of brave individuals with strong moral principles, who prioritize people over political beliefs.
