Stephen Miller conducts private conference with House Republicans on Trump's immigration plan.
Stephen Miller, Trump's top immigration aide, met with House Republicans.
On Wednesday, the president-elect's top aide on immigration and the border met with House Republicans in a roughly hour-long meeting.
Stephen Miller, who was appointed as U.S. Homeland Security adviser in the new Trump administration, was praised as a brilliant policy mind by lawmakers who left the room.
According to two sources, Miller discussed the importance of increasing the ICE workforce, which is significant considering Trump's pledge to carry out large-scale deportations upon his return to power.
Miller discussed ways to reduce federal funds for sanctuary cities and states, a promise made by Republicans to target this cash flow if they gained control of Washington.
The strategy meeting takes place as Congressional Republicans are readying to implement a significant conservative policy overhaul through the budget reconciliation process. By reducing the Senate's vote threshold from 60 to 51, reconciliation enables the party in control of Congress and the White House to enact broad policy changes, as long as they address budgetary and fiscal matters.
According to sources, during the meeting, Miller discussed potential border and immigration policies that could be included in a reconciliation package and the amount of funding required for Congress to allocate.
According to sources, Miller informed Republicans that the incoming Trump administration recognized that the president-elect's border and immigration objectives were unlikely to garner significant Democratic support and that more contentious issues would need to be addressed through reconciliation. However, the sources noted that more bipartisan initiatives could be achieved through the regular legislative process.
A House GOP lawmaker conveyed to Planet Chronicle Digital that Congress would align with Trump's directive.
The lawmaker stated that they anticipate a surge of executive orders at the beginning, which will aid in distinguishing between legislative responsibilities.
One source in the room stated that Miller highlighted the significance of messaging, asserting that "our message must reach the American people."
Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that Miller discussed "low-hanging fruit" that Trump could tackle through executive order, including "deportation" as a possibility.
Norman stated that dealing with tax matters would require some time.
Rep. Mark Alford, R-Mo., refused to provide specifics about the meeting but stated that the conversation centered on "illegal immigration and how it can be controlled to implement practical solutions to the program."
Alford stated that he had some queries regarding the expense to American taxpayers if we do not return 12 million undocumented immigrants who the Biden administration has allowed into our country.
Miller declined to answer reporters' questions when he left the room.
He was invited to speak before the Republican Study Committee, led by Rep. August Pfluger, R-Texas, a conservative think tank within the House GOP's largest caucus.
Neither Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., nor other GOP leaders attended the meeting.
During the meeting, Trump's aides had the chance to address the House GOP, according to Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., who stated that there was "nothing new" said during the gathering.
Trump and his aides have already paid heavy attention to congressional Republicans.
Several of his White House aides are in regular contact with top GOP lawmakers. Trump personally invited several groups of House Republicans to Mar-a-Lago last weekend.
