Several anti-Trump staff members are leading OpenAI, an initiative backed by Sam Altman, in promoting liberal causes.
An initiative to compete with China on AI was launched by the American Security Project.
OpenAI has collaborated with a new AI initiative backed by a group founded with former Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, which promotes left-wing causes and has several board members affiliated with Democrats.
In October, Politico reported that Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is leading an initiative called AI 2030, which aims to shape public discourse on U.S. competition against China in the field of artificial intelligence.
The American Security Project (ASP), a "non-partisan" think tank where Kerry was a founding member and served on the board of directors, is leading the initiative.
The Rockefeller Foundation has given millions of dollars to left-wing causes.
David Wade, Kerry's former chief of staff, who assisted Hunter Biden during the Burisma scandal, is currently on the board of directors and wrote an op-ed in The Hill about the need for the US to compete with China on AI.
ASP has former Obama Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on its board, who once referred to then-President Trump as an "embarrassment" in 2018.
In a 2023 press release, Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., who is also a board member at ASP, publicly opposed Trump's tariff policies, labeling them "idiotic" and "illegal."
In 2018, ASP published an op-ed by Board Member Matthew Wallin, where he criticized Trump's diplomatic approach towards Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In 2017, Wallin boosted the discredited media story on X and Twitter that Trump characterized the white supremacists who participated in the deadly Charlottesville rally as "good people."
Chris Lehane, OpenAI's Head of Global Policy, wrote the "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" memo, which was promoted by then-first lady Hillary Clinton and dismissed the Monica Lewinsky scandal as part of a right-wing media conspiracy.
Recently, Lehane, a longtime Democratic Party consultant, has donated funds to aid former Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., and Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif.
Altman donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration, but has faced criticism for his previous high-dollar donations to left-wing causes, including a $250,000 donation to American Bridge during the 2020 election.
In contrast to donating to only one Republican in recent years, Altman has contributed to hundreds of Democrats, according to Newsweek's summer report. Additionally, he was recently appointed as a co-chair for the incoming Democratic mayor of San Francisco's transition team.
In late 2019, Altman hosted a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang at his San Francisco home and donated over $1 million to Democrats and Democratic groups, including $600,000 to the Senate Majority PAC, $100,000 to the Biden Victory Fund, and over $150,000 to the DNC. He also gave thousands to state Democratic parties and top Democrats in the House and Senate.
In 2014, Obama headlined a fundraiser for the DNC at Y Combinator's offices in Mountain View, California, which was co-hosted by Altman.
After Trump's election in November, Altman wrote on X, "Congratulations to President Trump. I hope for his great success in the role."
He emphasized the importance of the US remaining at the forefront of AI development with democratic principles.
During his tenure as CEO of Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019, Altman frequently discussed China in his blog posts and interviews. In 2017, he stated that he felt more comfortable discussing controversial ideas in Beijing than in San Francisco and believed that expanding into China was crucial because he had met some of the most talented entrepreneurs there.
Elon Musk has expressed his distrust towards OpenAI, Sam Altman, and their AI efforts, stating last year that he believes the most powerful AI in the world should not be controlled by someone who is not trustworthy.
Musk has accused OpenAI's ChatGPT function of being infected with the "woke virus," while also being involved in a highly publicized legal dispute with Altman.
An AI chatbot known as ChatGPT can simulate human conversation and has been used globally for various tasks such as writing emails, debugging computer programs, answering homework questions, playing games, writing stories and song lyrics, and more.
""Developing AI has the potential to eliminate many current jobs, but it can also create much better ones. The reason for developing AI is to improve our lives and have a significant impact on our lives. The greatest technology humanity has yet developed is AI, and its promise is to provide individualized learning for each student," Altman stated in a 2023 interview with ABC News."
Forbes reported that OpenAI has been quietly pitching its products to the U.S. military and pursuing defense contracts in recent months.
OpenAI spokesperson stated that America must win the AI race and that both sides of the aisle are united in supporting policies to maintain the US's competitive edge against China.
A twenty-year-old bipartisan organization, ASP, collaborates with legislators, retired flag officers, subject matter experts, and groups from diverse political backgrounds to produce high-quality research and achieve bipartisan consensus on emerging threats to our national security, as stated by an ASP spokesperson to Planet Chronicle Digital.
"OpenAI is one of the donors for AI Imperative 2030, but we ensure an equal balance of opinions informed by independent experts and Consensus for American Security members, including Julia Nesheiwat, Ph.D., former Trump Homeland Security Advisor, and Neil Chatterjee, former Chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission under Trump. We also recently hosted a roundtable featuring Nazak Nikakhtar, another former Trump official."
The objective of AI Imperative 2030 is to prevent China from surpassing the U.S. and becoming the world leader in AI by 2030. President Trump has emphasized the need for the U.S. to compete more vigorously with China, and we are committed to working with his administration and the Republican Congress to develop effective and cost-efficient policies to achieve this goal.
