Rep. Hank Johnson, a Georgia Democrat and advocate for Supreme Court reform, believes that implementing term limits for justices would prevent the long-term corruption and deterioration that he sees on the court.

Johnson stated in an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital on Thursday that term limits are necessary to prevent long-term corruption on the court caused by corporate influence, which cannot be corrected through impeachment and conviction of a justice.

"If you couldn't impeach and convict Trump, you won't be able to remove a corrupt Supreme Court justice who is following the right-wing's agenda."

Johnson, a ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee, has previously collaborated with Democrats in both the House and Senate to propose court reform bills aimed at expanding the court and limiting the justices' terms. In the most recent Congress session, Johnson introduced the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization Act (TERM), which proposes 18-year term limits on justices.

In May 2023, Johnson joined a group of senators and representatives in reintroducing the Judiciary Act of 2023, which aims to expand the Supreme Court to a 13-justice bench. The current nine-justice court has a conservative supermajority.

"Johnson stated that term limits would prevent the rot and decay from taking over the Supreme Court again."

Johnson argued that justices with lifetime tenure become "unaccountable," and they can do whatever they want, making the bench "a club of kings and queens who can do whatever they want simply because they serve in a third co-equal branch of government."

President Biden and Vice President Harris have both expressed support for Supreme Court reform, with Biden releasing a statement in July outlining three specific reforms, including term limits, and Harris echoing those sentiments, stating that the proposed reforms are necessary due to a crisis of confidence in the Supreme Court.

Johnson stated that he has not yet had direct talks with Harris regarding implementing reforms, but he believes she is aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

"Johnson stated that he is supportive of initiatives like his legislation and looks forward to discussing future plans with President-elect Kamala Harris and her team."

Planet Chronicle Digital reached out to the Harris campaign for comment.

Johnson acknowledged that enacting court reform proposals would be difficult due to the Senate's potential to block the measures through a filibuster.

He stated that we are committed to the long-term and that the legislation will always be taken into account, regardless of how long it takes.
