Rubio to present foreign policy qualifications to the Senate in his bid to become the country's top diplomat.
A Senate confirmation hearing for Rubio is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
Marco Rubio, a Republican senator from Florida, is preparing for a confirmation hearing with the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations on Wednesday, where he will be vying to become the leader of the State Department under the next Trump administration.
Despite being anticipated to face intense scrutiny from his fellow panel members regarding issues such as the war in Ukraine, Middle Eastern conflict, and the potential trade war with China, which Trump has threatened to intensify, Rubio is expected to navigate the process more effortlessly compared to other candidates Trump has designated for his Cabinet.
Rubio emphasizes the security challenges that have emerged since the end of the Cold War and the conviction that democracy could triumph worldwide and global free trade was the path forward, as stated in an excerpt of his remarks obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital prior to his address to the Senate.
"Instead of prioritizing the global order over our national interests, America has continued to act in what it perceives to be in its best interest. Meanwhile, other nations have manipulated the post-Cold War global order to serve their own interests at the expense of ours."
He stated that the postwar global order, although outdated, is being used as a weapon against us.
Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat, has endorsed his Republican colleague, Marco Rubio, and stated on Monday that they share many similar views on foreign policy. As a result, they have collaborated closely in the Senate to advance legislation on human rights globally.
Senator Rubio has a thorough understanding of the United States' role on an international scale, has served with honor on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and is a good choice to lead the State Department. Durbin stated this after a meeting in which they discussed security issues involving Russia's threat in the Baltic Sea and the NATO alliance.
In November, Trump announced his nomination of Rubio for the top diplomatic job, which the senior member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee described as both an "incredible honor" and a "significant responsibility."
As the secretary of state, it is my duty to implement the foreign policy established by the president of the United States. I hope to have the chance to fulfill this role if my colleagues in the U.S. Senate approve my nomination.
The challenge of fulfilling the orders of the executive office could be Rubio's most significant obstacle, both during Senate interrogation and in assuming the role if he is confirmed by the upper chamber.
The AP report suggests that the incoming administration plans to clear house in the National Security Council to ensure the president is only surrounded by those who support his agenda, as Trump has repeatedly made clear he expects unwavering loyalty from Cabinet members, advisers in the White House, and even military leaders.
Despite their agreement on certain issues such as supporting Israel, being tough on China, and opposing dictatorship in Latin America, which may not face much opposition from Democrats in the Senate, Rubio may face challenges in navigating other contentious matters.
During the 2016 presidential race, Rubio and Trump frequently engaged in verbal sparring.
The duo have reconciled their differences mainly because Rubio has become more aligned with Trump, which has made him adept at navigating the political tightrope between satisfying Trump and pursuing issues important to him.
On the campaign trail, Rubio's stance on the Trump camp's controversial comments regarding U.S. support for Ukraine and ending the three-year war became clear.
"In a September interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," Rubio stated that he is not aligned with Russia's position, but unfortunately, the war in Ukraine will likely end through a negotiated settlement."
Vance's comments about Ukraine ceding land to Russia and establishing a demilitarized zone along the current front lines were not directly addressed by Rubio.
He stated that he would be content with a deal that ends the hostilities and is advantageous to Ukraine, ensuring they maintain their sovereignty and do not become a satellite or puppet state.
Trump's NATO stance was a concern, and Rubio supported him after he said that any nation, including Russia, should be allowed to do whatever they want to any NATO country that did not meet their defense spending obligations.
"In February, Rubio informed CNN's Tapper that Trump was not a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Rubio stated that Trump did not speak like a typical politician and that people should have realized this by now."
In 2019, Rubio helped reintroduce bipartisan legislation to prevent any president from unilaterally withdrawing from NATO without Senate approval, a move that Trump threatened and was a top concern echoed by Trump's former NSC adviser, John Bolton, during the latest presidential race.
The loyalty of Rubio to the incoming president may be put to the test if he is asked about the president-elect's expansionist rhetoric, such as acquiring Greenland and the Panama Canal through the use of the U.S. military.
Rubio's office could not be reached by Planet Chronicle Digital for comment on his stance on U.S. intervention in Greenland and the Panama Canal, which is under NATO protection and was given back to Panama by the U.S. in 1999 but has been accused of being taken over by China by Trump.
