Rubio Confirmation Support from Senate Democratic Whip: Shared Foreign Policy Views
Trump appointed Rubio as Secretary of State.
Dick Durbin, the Senate Democratic Whip from Illinois, announced that he plans to vote in favor of Marco Rubio's confirmation as Secretary of State.
Senator Rubio and I share many similar views on foreign policy, and as a result, we have worked closely together in the Senate to advance legislation on human rights, the threat of China, and the recent sham election in Venezuela, according to Durbin.
The Democrat lawmaker stated that they believe Senator Rubio has a comprehensive understanding of the United States' role on an international level, has served with integrity on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and would be an excellent candidate to lead the State Department. They intend to support his nomination when it is presented to the Senate.
In November, President-elect Donald Trump announced Rubio as his choice for a cabinet position.
Rubio is likely to sail through confirmation on a bipartisan basis.
Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., previously stated that Rubio was a strong choice and expressed his support for confirmation.
If Rubio resigns to serve in the Trump administration, DeSantis will appoint a replacement to represent Florida in the Senate until a 2026 special election is held to fill the seat.
On Wednesday, a nomination hearing for Rubio will be held by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
Rubio has served in the U.S. Senate since early 2011.
