RFK Jr. should avoid the polio vaccine, warns McConnell.
A polio survivor, McConnell, vowed to combat vaccine misinformation.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. received a stern warning from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell after a report revealed that one of Kennedy's associates had attempted to revoke approval for a polio vaccine.
McConnell, a polio survivor, stated that "attempts to undermine public trust in established treatments are not only misguided but also hazardous."
To avoid any suspicion of association with vaccine skepticism, anyone seeking the Senate's consent to serve in the incoming Administration should avoid any appearance of association with such efforts, even if it means avoiding naming Kennedy, President-elect Trump's choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
On Friday, the New York Times reported that Aaron Siri, Kennedy's personal attorney, had represented clients in cases seeking to overturn approval for a polio vaccine and other cases.
McConnell stated that like many families before them, his parents experienced the anguish and dread of seeing their child grapple with the life-changing diagnosis of polio. From the age of two, I was able to live a normal life without paralysis thanks to the remarkable blend of modern medicine and a mother's love. However, for those who came after me, the true miracle was the life-saving power of the polio vaccine.
I have been proud to work with committed advocates for decades, including Rotary International and the Gates Foundation, and have used my public platform to promote the search for cures for future generations. I have never wavered from confronting false information that hinders the progress of life-saving medical treatments, and I will not do so now. The GOP leader was accompanied by his Democratic counterpart, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who urged RFK Jr. to clarify his stance on the polio vaccine.
"Schumer stated that the attempt by people in the Trump Transition to eliminate the polio vaccine, which has eradicated polio in America and saved millions of lives, is both outrageous and dangerous. He urged RFK Jr. to take a stance on the matter."
A Trump transition team spokesperson stated that Mr. Kennedy supports making the Polio Vaccine accessible to the public and ensuring it is thoroughly and properly studied.
