Republican House members propose to remove federal funding from states that issue driver's licenses to undocumented individuals.
Hochul faces pressure from Tenney to repeal Green Light Law, similar to Trump's border czar.
Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., proposed a bill that would withdraw federal highway funding from states that provide driver's licenses and identification cards to undocumented immigrants.
At the start of the new Congress, Tenney, who co-chaired the House Election Integrity Caucus during the 2024 race that resulted in President-elect Trump's victory, re-introduced her bill, known as the Red Light Act.
The proposal aims to withhold federal highway funds from states that issue driver's licenses or identification cards to unlawfully present aliens, as well as for other purposes.
"New York is incentivizing and rewarding criminals with driver's licenses and identification cards, despite the nation's unprecedented migrant crisis, according to Tenney in a statement to Planet Chronicle Digital. The Green Light Law in New York has given licenses to illegal immigrants, allowing them to roam freely and commit heinous crimes, including attacking, raping, and murdering members of the community. Additionally, this law restricts law enforcement from accessing DMV records, hindering the enforcement of immigration laws. As a result, states that refuse to comply with the nation's immigration policies are not rewarded with federal funding."
In 2019, the Green Light Law was passed by the state legislature and signed by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, allowing New York to issue driver's licenses to undocumented individuals. As part of a sanctuary policy, the state Department of Motor Vehicles was directed to withhold records from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or other federal law enforcement without a court order or judicial warrant signed by a judge for such information.
Law enforcement leaders have blasted the law as legislating obstruction.
Trump's border czar Tom Homan proposed blocking vehicles with New York license plates from entering the U.S. from the Canadian border if the state does not repeal the Green Light Law.
""Growing up in New York state and still owning a home there, what happens in the state holds great significance for me," Homan said in an interview with the Buffalo News."
"New York Gov. Kathy Hochul stated at a press conference on Monday that she finds it strange to believe that anyone would think that restricting the entry and exit of vehicles into our country and keeping New Yorkers in a foreign country is a wise course of action. She expressed her willingness to engage in a discussion with Homan about the matter."
The secretary of transportation would have the power to withhold 100% of the federal highway system's funding for each fiscal year, starting from 2025, under Tenney's bill.
The measure enables the secretary to redistribute funds to states that revoke driver's licenses or identification cards for aliens who are unlawfully present in the U.S.
