Reports indicate that a deepfake impersonator posing as a Ukrainian official targeted a Democrat senator during a Zoom call.
The Ukrainian foreign minister was allegedly impersonated using "deep fake" technology.
A "deep fake" video call that convincingly portrayed a Ukrainian government official is being probed by investigators.
On Wednesday, Sen. Benjamin Cardin, a Democrat, revealed that he had handed over evidence to law enforcement following a deceptive video call with an impersonator posing as a foreign official.
"Recently, a malicious person tried to deceive me by pretending to be someone else in an attempt to have a conversation. However, I quickly realized that the person I was speaking with was not who they claimed to be, so I ended the call and my office acted quickly, notifying the authorities."
A comprehensive investigation is currently being conducted by law enforcement regarding this matter.
Dmytro Kuleba, the Ukrainian foreign minister, had deceived Cardin into believing he was requesting a one-on-one conversation through what appeared to be authentic emails.
The Democratic senator's video call with the Ukrainian official started off normally but the conversation quickly became tense, and Cardin realized something was amiss.
According to reports, the Kuleba impersonator posed a series of direct foreign policy inquiries to Cardin, including "Do you support long-range missiles into Russian territory? I need to know your answer."
Cardin reportedly disconnected the call and contacted the authorities after realizing what was happening.
An alert was issued by the Senate security office to leaders on the Hill, warning them to be cautious of similar schemes.
The senator was targeted with politically charged questions by an impostor during the upcoming election, which were intended to provoke a political commentary on a candidate.
The FBI is reportedly investigating the incident.
