Report: Retired generals back Harris, criticize Trump over Afghanistan withdrawal.
Trump left Biden and Harris with a disaster, say former military brass.
A group of former military leaders is stepping in to shield Vice President Kamala Harris from backlash over the Biden-Harris administration's Afghanistan withdrawal strategy.
This week, a group of 10 former generals and admirals, including Admiral Steve Abbot, a former advisor to George W. Bush, and Generals Lloyd W. Newton and Larry R. Ellis, endorsed a political candidate for the first time.
The group wrote in a National Security Leaders for America letter that Vice President Kamala Harris is the best and only presidential candidate in this race who is qualified to serve as our commander-in-chief.
The letter stated that she has shown her capability to handle the toughest national security issues in various settings, including the Situation Room and international stages. She has successfully rallied allies against Russia's invasion of Ukraine and stood with them against China's provocative actions. Additionally, she has advanced U.S. leadership in space and artificial intelligence.
The group accused former President Trump of setting up President Biden and Harris for failure in Afghanistan by negotiating a deal "without involving the Afghan government" and releasing 5,000 Taliban fighters back onto the battlefield.
The generals wrote that President Biden and Vice President Harris were left without plans to execute a withdrawal, and with little time to do so. This chaotic approach severely hindered the Biden-Harris Administration’s ability to execute the most orderly withdrawal possible and put our service members and our allies at risk. Despite this, President Biden, with the support of Vice President Harris, ended America’s longest war, oversaw the largest airlift in U.S. history, and brought our troops home.
Harris has been criticized for her role in the withdrawal since she became the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. She declared that she was the last person with Biden when the administration made the decision to withdraw.
Recently, the issue has been brought to the forefront by Trump's campaign, with family members of fallen U.S. soldiers criticizing Harris and expressing their support for the former president.
On Tuesday night, during their first debate, Trump is certain to bring up the issue.
