On Wednesday, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., announced his withdrawal from the race for the ranking member position on the House Judiciary Committee.

Raskin's bid to challenge Nadler for the top Democrat spot on the committee becomes possible with Nadler's decision.

Raskin will succeed Nadler as Judiciary Committee chair, as Nadler is confident that Raskin will lead effectively in confronting the renewed threats to democracy and way of life posed by the return of Donald Trump.

Nadler (D-N.Y.) joins local politicians, transportation and environmental advocates for a news conference outside the Lincoln Tunnel urging the immediate implementation of New York’s Central Business District (CBD) Tolling Program, on April 21, 2023, in New York City.

Despite not being the Ranking Member, the 17-term New York Democrat will remain an active member of the Committee and is excited to collaborate with its new leadership in safeguarding vulnerable communities and preserving democratic values.

Several younger House Democrats aim to replace older, established party leaders in the next Congress, with Nadler stepping aside.

Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz., withdrew from the race for the top Democratic spot on the Natural Resources Committee after Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., announced his bid. Meanwhile, a group of lawmakers are challenging Agriculture Committee ranking member Rep. David Scott, D-Ga., for his position.

Nadler's ` did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Raskin thanked Nadler for his endorsement in a post on X.

"Jerry Nadler is a remarkable lawyer, patriot, and public servant who fiercely defends civil rights and liberties. His unwavering commitment to these values serves as an inspiration to our people. I am deeply grateful and humbled to have his support in the battles ahead," the Maryland Democrat stated.

The Judiciary Committee's presumptive elevation creates an opportunity for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., to consider the ranking member position on the House Oversight Committee.

"Ocasio-Cortez stated to reporters on Wednesday that she is having numerous discussions with her colleagues. She emphasized the importance of being fully prepared for a Trump administration while also advocating for the rights of everyday working Americans."
