Rep. Dean Phillips criticizes Biden after Hunter's pardon, arguing that some individuals are exempt from the law.
In May, President Biden declared, "No one is immune to the law."
On Monday, a Democratic U.S. congressman stated that it seems like some individuals are "exempt from the law" following President Biden's decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, despite his previous promises not to do so.
Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., criticized Biden's decision to pardon Hunter on social media, pointing out the president's earlier statement that "no one is above the law."
"Phillips wrote on X that it's time for the majority to condemn and confront legalized corruption, as certain Americans are above the law and influence is always for sale."
On Sunday, President Biden granted a comprehensive pardon to Hunter Biden, who had previously stated that he would not receive one. Earlier this year, the first son was found guilty of two federal cases: in September, he pleaded guilty to federal tax charges, and in June, he was convicted of three felony gun charges after falsely claiming on a mandatory gun purchase form that he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.
The president contended in a statement that Hunter was targeted solely due to his relationship with him and that there was an attempt to destroy Hunter in order to destroy him.
Biden had declared publicly on numerous occasions that he would not grant a pardon to Hunter if a jury found his son guilty.
Phillips, who failed to secure the Democratic presidential nomination, contended that under different circumstances, neither Hunter Biden nor Trump may have been charged with criminal offenses.
"Two things can be true at once: Neither Hunter Biden nor Donald Trump would have been charged with certain crimes had they not been political figures," he wrote. "Pardoning powers have been abused by Trump and now Biden, and must be reformed."
The pardon has been met with criticism from various groups, including Republicans, some Democrats, and the media.
On Monday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was questioned by reporters about whether Biden and his representatives had lied to the American people. Jean-Pierre replied, "The president values honesty with the American people," and frequently referenced Biden's own statement on the matter.
Biden has not yet answered reporters' questions about why he broke his promise to Americans and granted a pardon to his son.
